‘Mabel’ Black Ford Popular 103E 1956, large number of spares and tuning parts, literature etc.
I had been trialling for the past 30 years in home built specials, the last of which, Torum, I sold 5 years ago to fund the sidevalve projects. Since refurbished in 2000 the car has been modified for and developed for Trials – the car has successfully completed several events including MCC Lands End, ACTC Tamar Classic Trial (Class Win) and in June 2016 ASWMC Championship Motor Traders Trial – double driven for 48 hills then drove home ready to be prepared for the next season. The car has also carried the bride to 2 weddings, so she scrubs up well!
Unfortunately, a couple of weeks after that event I fell, fracturing my skull and breaking my neck. 2 years on I realise that due to my injuries I am not going to be able to complete the work on the car I intended or enjoy ‘Mabel’ any more. I have had a lot of pleasure from my sidevalve years but now have to be realistic and move on, so all my ‘collection is up for sale. There is the car that is up and running but would benefit from new petrol and a check over. Also, my huge collection of spare parts and period tuning and modification parts. I would prefer to dispose of it all as one lot and move on with my life so offers are invited
The car – Prior to my ownership it belonged to one family in Sidford, Devon.
Bodywork - solid with a rust-free workmanlike appearance – it is a trials car, so it has a few blemishes and scars as you would expect. The underside is painted and waxoyled. All steel wings shortened front bumper new rubbers for windscreen and rear window. The front bulkhead slightly modified to accommodate 100E engine with twin SU carbs. Wooden floor panels replaced with marine ply. Spare fibreglass wings front and rear, spare steel bonnet, nose cone and boot lid. Doors solid but would benefit from replacement window channels and winders, these parts included.
Interior - Retrim started and some new material and parts included, Corbeau classic bucket seats available if required otherwise all seats are black prefect items. Parcel shelf included not fitted.
Engine – currently a 100E engine is fitted, new oil pump, aquaplane manifolds, twin SUs (bought new and hardly used), new SU fuel pump with safety cut off switch wired in, side exit silenced exhaust. Spare engine, radiators, and numerous other spare engine parts. Accelerator cable is fitted, spare standard linkage included. Spare E93A engine with aquaplane head and partly rebuilt in 2011 – bill for just under £900 available. Other spare E93A engines and lots of parts for E93A and 100E including a spare modified 100E sump to fit 103E. External oil filter kit. Twin fully restored MC2 ‘Aquasport’ carburettors. GN Tubular inlet and outlet manifold in excellent condition. NOS petrol tank fitted 2 years ago with locking cap. Spare petrol tank with original cap. Standard radiator – electric thermostatic fan fitted. Several spare radiators.
Electrics – converted to 12 volt, rewired with fuses and relays – British standard wiring colours, alternator. Land rover 12volt wiper motor. Powerspark distributor and electronic ignition with Powermax coil and a spare coil alongside. Halogen bulbs in standard headlamp surrounds, front and rear flashing indicators, period front lumax fog lamp and modern rear fog lamp, lumax driving lamp, lumax reversing lamp – all period items. Supplementary instruments (rev counter, oil pressure, ammeter, voltmeter, temperature meter and switches including aircraft type knock off ignition switch and button operated starter solenoid. Klaxon horn. Rally spec. navigators light. Spare original 6 volt electrical spare parts. Lucas hazard warning switch fitted but not fully wired up.
Transmission – Nearly new clutch, 10hp gearbox, ‘Cornish’ Heavy E83W modified axle (built by Nigel Hilling) since had a new crown wheel and pinion. Spare 103E axle and lots of parts. Spare gear boxes, clutch parts, torque tubes etc.
Suspension – panhard rod front, rear NOS Fordson van rear spring and panhard rod. Currently fitted with good lever arm shock absorbers. Kits to fit front and rear telescopic shocks included, also rear anti roll bar and mountings. NOS front axle, a frame, fixtures and fittings prepared to fit. Spare used front axle and suspension parts.

Steering – brand new unused rebuilt steering column and box included.
Brakes – new cables and shoes all round, additional floor mounted handbrake – dellow based system. Large number of spare brake parts including back plates, actuators, adjusters, cables and fittings etc.
Wheels – Standard 17-inch front wheels and lots of spare wheels and good spare tyres, currently fitted with good 18 inch rear wheels with a spare – all tyres nearly new. 16-inch prefect wheels, also included and some good tyres to fit prefect wheels. 16-inch E83W wheels blasted and primered.
In addition to those listed above there are masses of new and used spares.
In addition to the many spares for Mabel I have collected enough parts to build a sidevalve trials special for the historic trials championship, many of these parts are NOS or brand new. That project is not going to happen now, so all is included.
Tools – I have a variety of special tools that are also available including a Churchill steering wheel remover, rear hub remover, engine valve tools, and many others.
