The lowest production catalogue model at an estimate 88 units (only 66 in the domestic market), the Esprit S2. 2 not only has rarity value but also a historical one. It marks the introduction of the vastly improved 2. 2 litre Lotus engine. Manufactured for just one year and one month between 1980 and 1981, there are very few examples of this car still in existence.
This particular car is presented in the original body colour of Carnival Red with gold pin stripes and decals. It has just been resprayed by fibre glass car specialists, SMS Autospray following a full strip down of the body to ensure the best possible finish. The interior is trimmed in the original brown Marcasite which has been brought back to the original colour using brown suede dye. The seats, rear bulkhead, arm rest, choke housing, door card inserts and gear stick gator are in champagne leather, all of which were retrimmed last year. A certificate of provenance from Lotus shows that this is the only car produced with this body colour and trim combination.
Although this car has covered some 85, 000 miles, it has been fully restored in my workshop with assistance from SJ Sportscars when needed. Work carried out includes:
- Full engine re-build
- Gearbox overhaul
- Complete new suspension
- Complete new braking system
- Steering overhaul
- Renovation of chassis
- Complete renovation of electrical components
- New dash board
- New carpets throughout
- Refurbished original Speedline wheels
- New body panels and trim where needed
Throughout the restoration I have strived to return the car to its original specification and the car now benefits from having the original steering wheel and door mirrors which are exceptionally hard to come by. There is also an original S2. 2 owners handbook which is even rarer than the car itself. In the front boot is the original spare wheel and in the engine bay is a full tool kit roll and jack attached to the engine cover as they were originally presented.
The car has recently had a cam belt change and service, and comes with a full MOT.
Owing to the rarity of this car and its exceptional condition, I am asking £34, 000 ono. There is a fully documented spread sheet of all the parts I have bought for the car and a box file full with receipts. Also, there are hundreds of photos of the restoration which I will put on a CD for the new owner.
The car is located in Northampton, just five minutes from Junction 15.
