We are delighted to present for sale this extremely high specification Series 3, coined 'Old Pretty Girl Lily' that we sold in 2012. This vehicle is extremely unique and offers an incredible specification - read on below!
On the exterior, this old girl really lives up to her name, and there are lots of period features one would expect of a genuine station wagon - vintage numberplates, rear grabhandles, front mudflaps, rear mudflaps, free wheeling hubs for additional economy and reduced wear and vintage front spots. Several useful modern additions have been made such as the towball and electrics, larger defender style door mirrors, rear spot for extra visibility, and the addition of a set of road-biased 750 Grabber AT3s - a superb cross-climate tyre which offer the best compromise between on and off road ability. All of this really makes the vehicle look the part - and when coupled to the 'station wagon' Safari Roof and windscreen protector it makes an excellent marriage of modern usability with the vintage look. The paintwork has the patina one would expect of a vehicle of this age and is in keeping with the vehicle, which is pleasing to see.
The interior is an equally lovely place to be, with three front deluxe seats and twin bench seats in the rear. The interior is fitted throughout with deluxe carpeting, including the doors for additional soundproofing. The headliner and vents still survive in good condition... even with the sun-visors and mirrors integrated into them! The spare is housed on a dog in the rear, as it should be. There is a stereo and speakers fitted, which is a nice touch for longer trips - or if you are on your own! The station wagon sliding rear windows and alpine lights make the interior a bright and airy place to be.
Out on the road is where this vehicle shines - the addition of a 200TDI engine, coupled with the five speed gearbox means that this Series 3 drives as well as any on the road, and as well as is possible for a vehicle of this age! It is able to keep with modern traffic with ease, and the extra gear helps both with cabin intrusion and fuel economy. The 750 tyres give even more gearing, meaning that this vehicle will go far faster than you'd ever want to go! It is evident from the driving experience that when this vehicle was rebuilt, it was thoroughly gone through.
In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 that looks the part, whilst being ideal to use more frequently than standard, and not being lumbered with the period driving experience of an ordinary Land Rover®, then this could be for you. With the ability to carry the whole family in relative comfort and to keep with modern traffic, there are few Series 3s that are so capable in all situations. The previous keeper of OPG drove this down from Scotland, such is a testament to his trust in the machine - and remarked that he wasn't even tired when he got to his destination!
