A good quality example of the ever-popular MG Midget – an ideal ‘starter classic’, looking very smart in white paintwork and Rostyle wheels and with an Ivor Searle engine fitted. A local Midget, restored some years ago by the owner and now for sale after his passing away, sadly. Cared for by his restoration co-worker – a local motor engineer – since then and very lightly used, we have now serviced the Midget and then MoT tested her, so we have good knowledge of this Midget’s condition and recent work.

In the present ownership since 2009 (husband and wife), there is a neat history folder showing all expenditure and MoT certificates during that time, but also some additional history back through previous ownership to 1985. On taking ownership of the Midget, a restoration was carried out over a 3-year or so period, the owner assisted by a professional motor engineer. The engineer finished the final details of the rebuild after the owner passed away and has also taken care of the car since then, including an annual service and MoT (exempt).
Whilst there is no paperwork for the Ivor Searle engine, the factory have confirmed to us that it is an early-mid-2000s engine, a standard 1275cc and with the unleaded cylinder head conversion. We can also see from the MoT certificates that the engine has very little mileage on it, so that all bodes well.
This RWA (round wheel-arch) Midget is very smart in white and barring the odd, small chip here or there presents very well – a nice tidy driver Midget. The shutlines and panel-gaps are particularly good for a Spridget and as will be seen from the photos of her on the ramp, the underside and wheelarches are in very good condition indeed, so no concern at all re corrosion!
In the cockpit, everything looks smart and appears fully serviceable with no obvious damage or work needed, although the leather and alloy steering wheel could use a little leather dye/ treatment to bring the black back perhaps. There are some upgrades too with receipts showing new carpets and leather seat covers (and foams) in 2013 and a tonneau cover with centre-zip (the hood and frame is presently off the car having not been refitted or used since the rebuild).
In the boot is the spare wheel – a matching Rostyle – a jack and a car cover. The new owner may wish to fit carpet but that’s very much personal preference. The boot floor is again clean and tidy with no sign at all of corrosion.
Overall a very usable RWA MG Midget MkIII and benefitting from the Ivor Searle engine and smart, comfortable leather seats. Not only looking very nice but driving well too. She starts easily, smoothly into gear and pulls away strongly. The engine feels smooth and strong with good oil pressure and low/ normal water temperature, even and strong brakes and direct, slop-free steering.
The extensive history file is very welcome (you can’t ‘buy’ history!) and the Driver's Handbook, car cover and tonneau make for a great starter classic package! Now freshly serviced in our workshop and MoT'd, this is a good quality, ‘drive-away’ MG Midget MkIII.
