Descripción
Tipo 106N is one of the few Ferraris that were developed under Italian engineer Nicola Materazzi's supervision. His expertise on forced induction technology was recruited by Ferrari's racing division to develop the engine of Ferrari 126C Formula 1. Soon after he was appointed by the factory to lead as Chief Engineer the creation of Ferrari GTO, GTO Evolutione and, by Enzo himself, the creation of the F40. Concurrently, Materazzi also directed the development of Tipo 106N, the 328-based successor to the 208 Turbo. He redesigned the Dino-based engine to superior performance not by enlarging its capacity but by integrating an air-to-air intercooler and substituting the KKK turbochargers with water-cooled IHI. Fresh air inflow would be achieved via the NACA (NASA's predecessor) bilater inferior ducts and outflow via the 5 rear bumper vents. To enhance endurance it's 8 cylinders were lined with friction-reducing Cermetal and a pre-ignition sensor was fitted. The reliable plant was now capable of operating at cooler temperatures with earlier by 700 rpm and greater by 158 Nm torque delivery. His design permitted for a massive increase in power but Ferrari decided to limit it to only 100 bhp not to supersede the 328's output and performance. Notably, F1 engineer Materazzi's design along with the engine's howling turbo sound and the limited to 828 unit production run render the GTS Turbo much more collectible and sought after compared to the 328 GTS.
The GTS Turbo offered here was produced in early 1988 under special order to feature a beige leather interior with beige leather trimmed retractable roof and rear window surround, over black carpet. It is also one of the few Turbos produced with most attractive concave wheels prior to production switching over to convex. This well preserved GTS Turbo has been under maintenance from 1988 to 2011 by Milano's Sportcar s. n. c. and thereon by Genesis, Ferrari's official dealer and repair in Greece. In 2008 its authenticity was certified by Italy's FIVA Automotoclub Storico Italiano and in 2018 by Greece's FIA ELPA. It comes with all books and manuals, original sets of tools and jack.
