For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2 109 Station Wagon in Limestone (1959).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Believed to be the earliest surviving home-market (not export model) Series 2 109 petrol station wagon in existence. Chassis number the details below (the 6th 109 station wagon ever made). Overdrive. Deluxe Interior with doorcards. Heater with front demist. Later linked wipers.
We are delighted to present for sale this collector car – first sold by us many years ago under our old name of John Brown Land Rovers® (before Jaguar Land Rover® stopped the use of protected words by dealers in the brand). The old sticker is visible in the back and has been left there as part of the story of its history. It was dry stored by us as the customer wanted it to ferry people around his country hotel that was under construction. Unfortunately this took far longer than had been planned and we were offered the vehicle back. We have conducted some recommissioning and checks due to time left standing and it is now ready to go, on the first turn of the key every time.
Externally we have only cleaned this historic vehicle, not wanting to remove any older elements – as you can see the paintwork is far from perfect but we still feel it is well presented – the next owner can then elect to leave as is or improve in accordance with his/ her taste. There are added spots which work on full beam so we’ve decided to leave those fitted – as old Land Rover lights are not amazing at the best of times. There are side sides all round including one for the rear passengers. The tropical roof, vents and liner all survive. A matching set of wheels and tyres are fitted, and all in all it looks the part. Later mirrors are fitted for better road use. It’s nice to see the early style front valence survive along with the screw type vent hinges, denoting Series 2 manufacture.
The interior survives in the main with two front seats with cubby, three rear tip ups and a pair of (later) benches to the rear. The door cards and headliner survive and are both in useable condition. Luxury matting is fitted for sound deadening and comfort. It is interesting to see that a 1977 registration is etched into the glass, reflecting the logbook’s first registration date of 4. 10. 1977. We don’t know why it was registered later – whether it was not registered by the original owner for estate use, was retained at the factory for demonstrator purposes or spent early life in the military or civilian services…. we may never know, but due to the early manufacture it perhaps is not surprising it went off to do “other things.” These vehicles were screwed together in 1958 for 1959 release. An overdrive is fitted for better cruising, and the twist style Series 2 vent flaps and original horn button reflect the early build. Clearly visible is the chassis number on the original VIN plate, which matches the front chassis leg – which is rare but nice to see.
Out on the road, this old girl really does well considering her size and age. The steering is of the lightest we have ever known, the petrol engine is whisper quiet and runs without issue and the gearchange is pleasing. The overdrive adds a little comfort, and all in all for a vehicle of this age, she goes well.
In summary, if you are a collector of early chassis numbers, then be quick. We have priced this reasonably – and the last one we saw that purported to be the earliest survivor was number 12. Since then we have kept quiet about this vehicle and have not seen any others remotely as old. As such, unless we are told different, we believe this to be the earliest surviving 109 petrol station wagon in The World……and it’s a runner, not a pile of rust with a tree growing through it!
