‘PBD 498’, 1957 Ford Zodiac Highline Auto
A really striking classic – imposing (it is not a small car!) and very stylish in the two-tone paintwork! On closer inspection, in immaculate condition following a 5-year-long nut and bolt restoration! It is rare too – not only as a 2. 5-litre, 6-cylinder (as opposed the 4-clyinder Consul) but not just as the top-of-the-range Zodiac (vice lower Zephyr) but as a Highline model and here with the optional (at cost) Automatic gearbox for nice, relaxed driving. Family-friendly classics are not common and if you like 50s or 60s style – and a hint of Americana – then what better choice?
The present owner purchased ‘PBD’ in 2014 and set about a full restoration. Much of the work he was able to carry out himself but all of the specialist tasks – engine machining and rebuild, gearbox overhaul, bodywork paint-preparation and respray and other tasks were all carried out by specialists. Replacement panels were bought in from Australia and Aldridge were engaged to carry out the trimming. Clearly the restoration was done with quality very much as a priority, indeed our technicians commented on the Zodiac’s quality when we checked her over on the ramp in preparation for sale.

Custom tow-bar (removed but with the car).
Blaupunkt Dortmund radio with MP3/ phone connectivity.
What more to say? Probably the most important thing to mention is the history that accompanies the Zodiac. A file full of invoices and 2 box files full of documentation – mostly original factory publications, such as colour/ trim cards, the parts manual, several brochures and more, all lovely to have and items which are both a delight to look through and bring the Zodiac and its period to life.
In summary a stunning Zodiac in a very attractive 2-tone paint and trim combination, with a number of quality modifications/ upgrades and with the peace of mind that a full, photo-history restoration brings and with a great history file. An iconic 50s, family classic, now checked over in our workshop and freshly MoT tested, and ready for summer events and many miles of enjoyable motoring.
