MG TD “Lightweight”
1953 Chassis No. TD23539. Totally rebuilt in the early 2000s. Bespoke alloy on steel tube body, fully road legal. An invigorating fast road car, or ready for competition use in 2022. It has been a regular competitor in the MGCC Speed Championship: Southern series winner in 2011.
Engine fully balanced with block sleeved to 1497cc and waterways filled to allow full flow cooling (G Edney). Solid skirt pistons are TF1500 + . 030” C. R. 10. 6 Gas flowed and dowled inlet tract and head. Free flow tubular exhaust. Race cam, lightened cam followers & pushrods, lightened flywheel, uprated 8” clutch. Crankshaft last crack tested when engine stripped in 2020. Comprehensively baffled sump to prevent oil surge under braking/ cornering. Lightweight alloy radiator, electric fan, electric water pump.
Shortened front springs, antiroll bar, V8 wishbone bushes, lever arm shock absorbers rebuilt with phosphor bronze bushing and garter seals, higher viscosity oil. Softened and lowered rear springs, stiffened lever arm shock absorbers, anti-tramp bars.
Ford type 9 five speed close ratio gearbox. Fifth gives 100 mph at 6000 RPM (topped on Lavant Straight at Goodwood). Banjo axle with Quaife LSD. 10” drum brakes. Front/ rear adjustable balance valve. Modern master cylinder. 4 stud wheels with Avon CR6ZZ tyres
Locking vintage style filler cap, 6 gallon baffled alloy tank, Facet pump, pressure reducer, 1. 5 inch SUs with knife edged butterflies, matched to polished inlet manifold. Bespoke wiring harness, fully fused system, road legal lighting, lightweight racing battery. Aldon Ignitor electronic ignition.
Smiths/ Jaeger instrumentation: Mechanical speedometer, Electronic tacho, Oil temperature, Water temperature, Oil pressure, Ammeter. Roll bar (bolted in rather than welded to chassis, so removable) Full harnesses. Tonneau cover.
