It could be said that making a car shorter and narrower than the outgoing Silver Cloud 3 wouldn’t have been a hard thing to do, but to have achieved that, and yet given the driver and passengers more space for themselves and their luggage, was a good achievement to keep Rolls Royces of the late 60’s/ early 70’s an attractive proposition for the wealthy and discerning motorist. Clothed in updated bodywork from John Polwhele Blatchley and, allied with a new air suspension system licensed from Citroën, it made the Silver Shadow 1 a superbly comfortable vehicle in which to travel around. Stopping power was aided by the addition, and therefore updating, to disc brakes, from drums that adorned the previous model. Thus, a clear line was drawn, and a new direction taken from the Cloud 3 that had served Rolls Royce so well for the previous 11 years of construction.
Powered by a 6. 75lt 189hp V8 engine, coupled to a General Motors-sourced 3-speed Automatic gearbox, it gave ample power and torque for serene motoring.
This 5-owner car has been in the custody of it’s current owner since 1988. A box of receipts show that he enjoyed and cherished the car, and it’s now ready for the next owner to appreciate. The paint and leather are in great condition, and need no attention. The wood on the door caps and dashboard has to be seen to be believed, and bears witness to the care lavished on this car by the previous owners. Come and have a look.
