We are delighted to present for sale this 1961 Land Rover® Series 2, which has been a local car for a number of years. We collected this vehicle personally and drove it the 40 miles to our unit, and it performed without fault.
The big ‘draw’ in purchasing this vehicle was the originality of it – externally there are no ‘nasty’ additions – the wing top mounted mirrors, vintage plates, rear grab handles, rear mudflaps, rear step, bonnet mounted spare (the list goes on). Even the galvanised cappings are original and not painted over, which is great to see. The tyres are virtually new, and have over 10mm of tread at each corner. We think it looks just right and the condition of the bodywork (straighter than usual at this age) is a credit to the careful attention received by the previous keeper.
On the inside, there is a full set of Elephant Hide Seats, along with matching door cards, which is exceptionally rare to see. The washers still operate on the old fashioned ‘hand pump’ to the right of the steering wheel. Deluxe matting is fitted to the footwells. There is a heater with front demist fitted, which is handy for the upcoming colder months. We’re big fans of these truck cabs – the smaller cabin is easier to heat, quieter and more comfortable, and the rear can be used to put logs, coal, or the dogs in without having to worry about dirtying your seats! The rear window slides open for when you want access to the rear, and can be closed to maximise comfort when not in use. They are also more secure as both doors lock and the cabin is contained.
We drove this vehicle back to Thirsk with a team of two mechanics – it performed without fault the entire way back. The steering is sharp and the brakes are strong (we know this thanks to a gentleman in a Tractor who pulled out on us point blank!). The engine is a joy to drive, and it rides as well as one can expect from a standard, leaf sprung set-up. The journey home had every ‘obstacle’ imaginable – hilly B roads, dual carriageway, 30mph town work, contraflow – and this old girl took it all in her stride. Based on the history and how it feels on-road, it is clear it has been cared for and loved regardless of cost. The only complaint of our Workshop Manager, the driver of the car, was that the journey wasn’t longer!
