this mercedes 500 sel has been in dry storage for 17 years which has preserved it from the open elements !!
this is a very early 1982 right hand drive w126
top of the range 500 sel in 1982 !
( the 560 was not introduced until many years later )
its now 40 years old and will be mot and tax exempt next year !!
sold needing recommissioning !!
not restoring !!
this is not a basket case nor does it have any serious corrosion issues !!
the good
an amazing early rhd w126 survivor
its only had 4 previous recorded keepers although i was told it was 1 owner who moved it around within his family and business for parking permit reasons in london
( sadly i have nothing to verify this )
it has full service history mainly mercedes furthermore it was serviced every year prior to being taken off the road in 2005
its a really sound rot free example needing only cosmetic tidying
it has air conditioning
its in a great 80s period colour
the interior is exceptional with no dash cracks etc ( with only the edge of the drivers seats needing a repair
the door cards are perfect
the carpets are superb
the wood inserts are excellent and not peeling of the dash
the headlining is excellent
the velour interior is lovely
the switch gear is excellent
the rear footrest are still there !
the electric windows are working
the electric sunroof is working
the electric seats are working
it needs no replacement panels
the door are rot free inside and out
the rear wheel arches are exceptional
front and rear bumpers are good
front wings not rotten
external brightwork excellent
not rot or rust under the rear screen nor in the boot area !!!!!!!!
the boot floor is like new !
the boot area needs no more than a clean
all the glass is original including the front and rear screens which are still excellent
the sills are exceptional with only minor under seal lift around 2 jacking point ( not rotten ! )
the underneath of the car is superb and obviously has never been welded nor does it appear to need any !
all lights front and rear seem good with no visible cracks or defects
( they are also all working ! )
the engine bay is excellent with no rot on the inner wings nor under the headlight area
not rot by the battery tray nor on the bulkhead
other than a couple of minor surface rust spots the engine bay is pretty superb
still has all 5 original 14" "mexican hat" style alloy wheels
tyres are old and need replacing but do hold air
not so good !
the car has been off the road for 17 years
it will need a full recommissioning
service ( engine , gearbox, new fluids, oils, brakes checking, new tyres battery etc
externally the car is presentable however whilst its not rotten most panels have surface rust scabs/ chips
( there are scabs on the bonnet, boot, front wings , rear wings, doors, roof, surface corrosion on the aluminium screen trims etc )
i had intended to get a high quality external repaint carried out as this car has the potential to be one of the best early 500sels left on uk roads
i had no intention of selling it, as i realise exceptional early w126s are few and far between, and this car deserves to be repainted , made perfect and cherished
i have had the car with a classic car specialist in shere guildford who has recently drained and cleaned the fuel tank / system , fitted a new fuel pump, changed the oil, removed the metering head then cleaned it and freed of the float
he added fuel , connected a battery and the car fired up 2nd flick of the key
the engine is silky quiet , has no nasty noises and is not smokey
the oil pressure sits perfectly so as expected the heart of the car is really good
( no doubt benefiting from such good servicing prior to being stored )
he managed to drive the car a short distance on his farm to ensure it was engaging gears properly which it does !!
however it is important to note that the car is not properly recommissioned and whilst it starts it does not idle properly so cannot be driven until its sorted nor made road legal
he also commented that there are no obvious oil leaks with the underside of the car being dry and free from oil and it outstanding condition

the cost back in 1982 was nearly £30000 !!!!
i purchased in april 2020 with the intention of making it into a show stopper however a change in personal circumstances is forcing a reluctant sale
i purchased it via a classic car dealer who advised me that the owner had passed away many years ago and the mercedes had sat for 15 years covered in dust in the wealthy owners private underground garage in west london
when these cars were new mercedes production numbers were very limited hence why the original owner chose to buy it in germany and speed the delivery process up !
the original service book has the confirmation of pre-delivery inspection date stamped 14th june 1982 work sindelfingen)
my father ran the normand london mercedes benz dealerships and had several w126 models
all fantastic cars with the now long gone original mercedes carved out of granite over engineered build quality !!
regarded as the last "proper" mercedes and also voted the best executive car in the world at the time !!
i love the styling of the early pre facelift cars with the "mexican hat" style alloys
simple elegance
so for me finding a very early right hand drive production car with full specification and the all important air conditioning , full service history , low mileage and in exceptional sound original condition took a long time !!
