Before his untimely death in 1956, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari—son of Enzo— had designed a dual-overhead camshaft V-6 engine for both road and racing use. This type of engine was first used by Ferrari in 1967 and installed in a new car that was unveiled at that year’s Turin Motor Show. Its “Dino” nomenclature would honour Enzo’s late son, and the Dino 206 GT demonstrated that Ferrari could compete with the likes of Porsche by producing a sports car at a lower price point, while still offering bags of Italian style, flair, and drama.

Following a production run of 154 Dino 206s, Ferrari introduced the Dino 246 GT and GTS in 1969. Now boasting a 2. 4-litre V-6, this engine produced 15 more horsepower over the previous 2. 0-litre unit and was noticeably quicker than its predecessor. The new Dino could sprint to 60 mph in just over eight seconds. The 246 Dino boasted a near-perfect weight distribution, partly in thanks to its mid-mounted engine. From 1971 to 1974, Ferrari would produce the final iteration of the Dino, designated the “E Series”. These Dinos were equipped with dual-Weber DCNF7 carburettors, increasing the top speed to 149 mph. Inside, the dashboard was revised, allowing for the installation of a radio and sliding heater controls.

This ‘E Series’ Dino 246 GT was completed on 27 July 1973, finished in the dazzling colour combination of Blue Metallizzato over Beige. Chassis 06950 was specified with as a right-hand drive example destined for the British market, with power windows and standard Cromodora wheels. Upon completion it was invoiced and delivered new to Colonel Ronnie Hoare’s Ferrari distributorship, Maranello Concessionaires Limited of Egham for £4, 922. It was subsequently sold through Dovey Motor Co. in Cardiff on 24 October 1973 to George A. Boella Esq of Southampton. According to documents on file, Mr. Boella traded in Dino 246 GT chassis number 05122 which Dovey gave a £4, 950 credit for. With number plates fitted, an electric aerial and twin speakers added, and a full 14 gallon petrol tank, Mr. Boella owed just £1, 438. 55 on his new acquisition. The car has remained in the UK its entire life.

Chassis 06950 remains finished largely in its original Blue Metallizzato paint, with chrome bumpers providing an excellent accent to the striking shade. The Dino rides on Cromodora Dino wheels wrapped in new Michelin XWX radial tires. The interior is trimmed in its original unmarked Beige vinyl and features Daytona-style seats, power windows, and Blaupunkt radio. Based on photos of the numbers and the car’s accompanying Massini report, the chassis, body, engine, and gearbox are matching numbers. At time of cataloguing the odometer displayed 16, 234 miles.

Ahead of its display at Salon Privé Concours, 246FS underwent a schedule of preparation to include light cosmetic and mechanical works at W. D. WINS and Foskers. This included a top end engine rebuild, replacement of both fuel tanks, recommissioning of brakes, suspension and cooling system, testing and detailing for Concours and for light road use.

This beautiful Dino 246 GT is presented with a current UK-registered V5C document, in addition to a Dino leather folder containing: the period Ferrari warranty booklet; operating, maintenance and service handbook; a spare wheel, tools and a spare parts catalogue. The car also carries with it the unique ‘246 FS’ registration plate.

One of the finest original and preserved examples of this highly desirable Ferrari in existence, and surely a blue chip investment.
