1987 Jaguar XJS-C 3.6 Cabriolet Auto For Sale

With only 103 of the automatic 3. 6 XJS Cabriolets built before being replaced by the full convertible in 1988, finding one of these lovely cruisers today - let alone a good one - is increasingly hard.

First registered in September 1987, this beautiful British Racing Green Cabriolet is definitely one of the good ones. It’s covered only 69, 500 miles and has been in the same caring family ownership for most of its life.

The 3. 6-litre AJ6 engine is in fine fettle and mated to the (now) extremely rare 4-speed automatic (most of these Cabriolets were 5-speed manual) gives a silky smooth but potent drive. The range and flexibility of this combination ensures it effortlessly keeps up with modern traffic whilst still offering the grunt on kick-down to put a smile on your face every time. Suspension and steering show no slop: the car goes where you put it and there’s no wandering or vibration on those longer motorway journeys.

Unlike many, this XJS’s electrics are all in good working order and none of the dash warning lights stay illuminated after start-up (which, by the way, is on the button every time). The original radio is boxed-up in the boot having been replaced with an aftermarket Sony unit which includes CD and Aux-in functions.

Whilst not concours, the bodywork is in very good honest condition. Panels are all straight and the doors swing shut as they should. There’s a couple of superficial scrapes but nothing that catches the eye and certainly nothing that would signify any impending underlying trouble. Likewise, the brightwork is shiny and undamaged save for a small rough patch on the left-hand side rear bumper. Underneath is solid and the boot floor and under the carpets is completely dry. Incidentally, the boot houses the original spare, jack and Jaguar issue toolkit.

The interior is very nice. Being the Cabriolet, the rear seats were replaced with the stow-away compartments: these are fully functional with the left-hand one still housing the original issue fire extinguisher. The stitching at the front of both seat bases may benefit from a bit of TLC but otherwise the seats are in nice condition, fully retaining their structure and with no sagging or signs of collapse. The runners and recliners all work as they should. The dash is in top order with no bleaching or cracking. Sadly, the centre console ‘ski slope’ has dried and split…an easy and cheap fix should the new owner wish.

Receipts show several thousands of pounds spent in 2017 to have the Targa top and side panels replaced and professionally fitted by Aldridge Trimming. The result is terrific and still looks as good as new!

As well as the new hood, the car’s document file shows many additional thousands having been lavished by the family to keep this XJS in top condition. There is good service history showing throughout its life as well as copies of MOT certificates. The car will comes with a new MOT valid to 22nd May 2024.

This car was recently valued at £13, 000 by the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club: on offer now for only £9, 600 this beautiful and well tended XJS Cabriolet is as good as you’ll find for this price. Viewing highly recommended: contact us now for a test drive which is strictly by appointment.
