Chassis number GAW 35 was delivered to Freestone & Webb Ltd on 30th January 1933. The 4-door 4-light saloon carries notable unusual build options of polished bonnet hinge mouldings that sweep down each side of the car as well as stainless headlamps and two spare wheels. Inside, the upholstery has been fully retrimmed, further complimented by beautifully overhauled dashboard instruments.

When new, GAW 35 was ordered by Grimshaw, Leather & Co. Ltd of Union Street, Sunderland who were agents for Austin, Sunbeam, Alvis, Citroen, Rolls-Royce, Hillman, Ford, Arrol-Johnston and Chrysler.

The car was then supplied to Dex Garages, New Bridge Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Built in 1931, as well as having a car showroom, Dex Garages were famed for having commissioned one of the first multistorey car parks outside of London in the art-deco style. This state-of-the-art showroom was fitted with car lifts and car turntables and in August of 1934 Dex Garages then became official retailers for new Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

In August 1933 APJ 217 was handed over to its first owner V. L. Dominques of 8 Palace Gate Kensington. After four years of owning this fine example, the car was then sold onto C. B. Scott Esquire of Hill Road, St. Johns Wood, London. Scott served in the 1st World War as a Captain before working as a Stockbroker in London, later returning to the British Army as a battalion Captain.

The car was then purchased by a Mrs Chubb of Malden, Surrey, who owned the car for twelve years until the car left London for Dr P. M. Oxley of St. Cross Road, Winchester, Hampshire.

The current owner has enjoyed the car for 25 years investing in excess of £200, 000 in restorations to the car with ourselves and Clark & Carter Restorations Ltd. Starting from the front of the car, there is a complete brand-new radiator which sits beautifully in front of a fully rebuilt engine that is fitted with a new aluminium cylinder head. Underneath, the front axle has been fully rebuilt, as have the road wheels, brakes and shock absorbers.

Overall, the appealing beauty of the coachwork, accompanied by GAW 35’s mechanical specification, matching numbers and registration make this car a perfect addition to anyone’s car collection.

This is an exceptionally desirable 20/ 25 carrying stunning coachwork which has been subject to a no expense spared restoration. It is ready to grace concours lawns.
