The nice thing about driving a Porsche 356 is this wonderful light-footedness with which the car drives so willingly and seemingly without resistance. You sit comfortably on wide cushions with an adjustable backrest and hold a large, black steering wheel with attractive aluminum spokes and a chrome horn ring (special equipment!) in your hands. You feel really good and you can see something of the world, because the A-pillars are amazingly graceful. The shifter stretches out, waiting to be moved into position by a perforated glove.
It proved that this Porsche 356 B 1600 Super 75 is fun when its owner drove it on the Grand Tour dream route: 1, 643 km through the most beautiful areas of Switzerland – plus arrival and departure. It doesn't go through the comfortable tunnels, but up and down steep mountain passes and switchbacks, hundreds of curves, but also in dense city traffic through metropolises such as Geneva, Zurich and Bern. There is no better way for a classic car to prove its suitability for travel and reliability. Speaking of travel suitability: the rear seats can be folded down to form a luggage rack in no time at all. The suitcases can then be secured with stylish leather straps.
This reliability of a 60-year-old used car does not come by itself. This beautiful 356 was imported from Sweden in 1993, restored in 1993 and bought by its current owner in early 2001 from a well-known German classic car dealer. But until the car really met his distinctive quality expectations, investments were made in the car itself in addition to careful maintenance until the coupé was as beautiful as it is now and ran as reliably as it proved in the Swiss Alps and commuter traffic .
When I drove this Porsche, I had to think of the stories of the old gentlemen drivers who drove to Le Mans in their racing car, fought the 24-hour race and then traveled home again in the same car. Why did I have to think about it in this Porsche? Because he conveys the feeling that he can do it too, because he's really good all around. The quality is consistent whether you close a door, look at the wiring harness, crank a window or shift through the gears. Everything is going as it should. This Porsche 356 B 1600 Super 75 Coupe is for people who drive classic cars. It would just be a shame to just put him in a collection and not let him play his skills - because they bring a lot of fun and joy.
