The E39's predecessor, was the E34 which had enjoyed a hugely successful nine-year run, but as amazing as it was it needed a successor. Design work began in 1989 with the overall aesthetic being drawn by Joji Nagashima before being locked in by Chris Bangle. By 1994 the patent was signed for the new E39 design. The E39 was 55mm longer and 68mm wider than the E34. The E39 benefited from a 40% increase in torsional rigidity and the suspension was almost entirely made of aluminum.
The improved and more modern E39 was launched 28 years ago in 1995 at the Frankfurt Motor Show with prices from new starting at £43, 540. The build quality combined with near perfect 50/ 50 weight distribution and the abundance of tech has made this model a firm favourite with the press. What Car? Magazine recently named it one of the best cars in its 47-year-history.
This BMW 5 Series E39 540i model was manufactured between 03/ 1996 through to 09/ 2000.
The E39 is the last of the 5 series which leans more to the mechanical rather than the electrical, so if you are reasonably confident with the spanners you will find no big issues with maintaining it to a high standard. Parts remain easily accessible with lots of specialists and enthusiasts happy to help.
The E39 is packed with tech as well as being one of the first vehicles to have curtain airbags. Despite being 27 years old this model is fully equipped with cruise control, electric windows, air conditioning, multi-function steering wheel, hidden cassette player and the original BMW 6 CD changer installed in the boot. As a testament to BMW's commitment to safety there is a fire extinguisher and first aid kit safely mounted under the front seats whilst an easily accessible breakdown kit is neatly stowed under the boot lid. The full leather interior is both supportive and comfortable.
The E39 is considered by many to be one of the greatest saloon cars of its generation and some still consider it to be the best 5 series ever made with values now steadily climbing cementing the E39 as a wise investment.
The E39 is a joy to drive, perfectly balanced and more than capable in modern traffic. It is both comfortable and quiet and has all the features of a perfect grand tourer. The E39 will comfortably seat four adults. The silky smooth engine combined with the six speed gearbox makes longs trips and motorway cruising an effortless delight. At idle its naturally aspirated V8 motor is whisper quiet.
The rear wheel drive E39 4. 4litre V8 power plant produces 286bhp with 0-60 being a very respectable 6. 2 seconds.
This relatively low mileage E39 has been enjoyed in its current ownership for the last 15 years. A large and comprehensive history file accompanies the vehicle.
