The Bentley Mk VI and the R-Type were well received by those seeking to travel in comfort and style during the mid nineteen fifties. For those seeking a full 5/ 6 seater and a little more gravitas, the new cars were a great success and remain wonderful value. From 1955 Rolls-Royce completely redesigned their luxury car, the Silver Cloud replacing the Silver Dawn and Bentley Motors followed suit with their S Series to replace the R-Type. These were the last of the marques to retain a separate chassis for their standard cars. The early cars retained the reliable six cylinder engines with capacity increased to 4, 887cc, driving through am automatic or manual gearbox. The Pressed Steel Fisher bodies were longer to fit the extra 3 inches of wheelbase. Apart from badges and radiator grilles, the coachwork for the Rolls-Royce and the Bentley were much the same.
This 1959 S1 has been in the same family ownership since new, residing in Dorset for its entire life. It has been well maintained throughout and has had a repaint in 1996, when it was also re-chromed, and its last MOT was in 2009. After some time in storage, the bodywork and paint are mainly in good condition, apart from some minor rust areas to the rear quarter panels, and the odd rust bubble, which is not uncommon. The underside is sound and solid. The upper half of the body would benefit from a polish. The interior wood cappings, picnic tables and dashboard have all survived well, as have the carpets, upholstery and headlining. There is a small crack in the corner of the rear window. All original tools are present. The S1 is currently a non-runner and will require recommissioning before returning to the road, but the engine does turn.
