Here we have for sale this very late build Land Rover® Lightweight, which has just recently become MOT & Tax Exempt. This vehicle is finished in the Drab Olive colour scheme, with green wheels and khaki canvas.
Externally, all the hallmarks of a ?good? lightweight survive ? the bonnet mounted spare with correct retaining strap, front and rear nato hitches, front and rear bumperettes, front bumper rope, rear mud flaps, military screw lenses for quick bulb changes, bridging plate and a set of larger than standard tyres with a cross-climate tread for the best compromise between off and on-road ability. A recent canvas completes the look, and a full set of pioneer tools is fitted too ? something which is a real rarity to find nowadays! A modern towball has been fitted to allow the new owner to tow a conventional trailer rather than an ?O? ring, and larger defender style mirrors afford better visibility when driving and when parking. I?m sure prospective buyers will agree this is a very handsome lightweight indeed and has just about every feature one would hope to have.
On the inside, there are two standard outer seats, with matting to the footwells. It is great to see that lots of the original military items ? such as the flyscreens, the front heater with screen demist, gun clips, the wiper motor cover and steering column shroud are still fitted, as many of these items are no longer purchasable without a suitable exchange item. There is a red toggle cut off to the right of the steering wheel, allowing the owner to immobilise the vehicle when not in use ? handy to prevent slow draining of the battery or for security purposes. There is a seat belt bar fitted for over-the-shoulder belts for the front passengers. The USP of this lightweight though is that arctic heater in the middle of the front ? this provides ample heating for the occupants in all weathers and as can be seen from the photos, this also has a nozzle which can be given to the rear passengers so they can also enjoy heating too ? almost like a modern hoover hose, but that blows, instead of sucking. This means that, even in the very coldest weather, you won?t be finding this Land Rover® to have a cold driving experience!
Out on the road, this lightweight has benefitted from a previous body-on refurbishment, and this shows from behind the wheel. It has a well sorted feel, likely from sparing military use and then late release, as they were fastidiously maintained during active service duty. We tend to find this to be the case with lightweights like this ? late release meant lots of dry storage rather than civilian winter use, and when CAST off from the military, they were often bought by military enthusiasts intending to show them, and were stored in warm dry garages and only used in the best weather. This means, in direct comparison with civilian Land Rovers® of the same age, one finds that a lightweight is in a better condition throughout due to being passed through fewer sets of hands!
In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® Lightweight which can seat the whole family, can be shown at the weekend, can be used in all-weathers without the need for wearing 4 layers of clothing and that turns just about every head when out and about ? then this could be for you. Good quality Lightweights like this are becoming harder and harder to find as every year passes by- especially when one considers the military-only original issue and low production numbers when compared to the civilian variants ? and many being used for trialling post-release due to their narrow track and ability to fit the V8 engine!
