We are delighted to present for sale this example of a very rare Land Rover® Series 2a 109 “Dormobile” Conversion. We have had the privilege of selling a couple of these before, over our past years of trading. The previous keeper loved and owned this vehicle for 30 years, having enjoyed many trips in it…. only parting with it due to advancing years!
As can be seen from the photographs, this vehicle has been rebuilt in times past onto a new Galvanised Chassis. Externally, we have a host of features, some of which are specific to the Dormobile – the pop up roof with windows and opening ventilation -quite often these are in poor condition and are patched and/ or leaking – but as this is in good and functioning condition, we can only assume it must be replaced. This example benefits from a 240v 13amp plug in feature under the bonnet which heats and circulates the water throughout the cooling system. This can be used to pre-heat the vehicle on a cold morning, or indeed to provide hot water to the heating system within the Dormobile itself.
On the inside, the interior of most Dormobiles of this age tend to be so tired they are not usable – but this is a real exception as you can see. The cabinets and various additional features have all survived in good, usable condition. We have not tested the cooking facilities and would recommend that if they were to be used in earnest, that they be checked in by a Gas professional. The additional benefit of these Dormobiles is the ability to configure it to your taste – whether that be to create a dining zone or lounge area and have the sleeping facility on the bunks upstairs, or whether to have the table in the kitchenette and a double bed downstairs. We’ve all imagined what great fun it would be to set off on a road trip in a vehicle like this…. and with space for a portable toilet and fridge, alongside curtains, it could provide a practical, vintage camping experience.
The diesel engine fires up keenly and conveys this camper along very nicely indeed with no mechanical issues identified. The whole mechanical drivetrain is a simple, easy to maintain system and coupled with the galvanised chassis, should provide the new owners with a pleasant ownership experience.
