Citroën front-wheel drive. Company History André Citroën, founder of the French car brand Citroën, was born on 5 February 1878 in Paris and founded a gear factory in 1905. His father, Levie Citroën, was originally from Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The Citroën family is of Jewish origin. The family name (Citroën) literally means "lemon" in Dutch. Origin and vision (early 1930s) In the early 1930s, André Citroën wanted to develop an entirely new car that was radically different from what was current at the time. He had a few key points that he would incorporate into his car. One was a front-wheel drive car (hence the name Traction Avant). Secondly, a self-supporting body (monocoque). The Traction was known for its good handling, low centre of gravity and clean design. The car was popular with the French government and the Resistance during World War II. The Citroën Traction Avant was built between 1934 and 1957 in a variety of models and body styles. Each model had its own character, its own engine and its own target audience. In May 1934, they introduced the 7a CV Citroën Traction Avant which was built from 1934 to 1939. This car had a 1. 3 litre engine and was followed by the 7B and 7C with a 1. 5 and later 1. 6 litre engine (up to 36 bhp) It was followed by the 11 CV series (1934-1957) The 11 CV series included several models such as the 11 BL, the 11 B, the 11 F and the 11 commercial.
This car is the 11 BL (Berline Légère) and was the lightest version of the 11 series with a 1. 9 litre engine, 46 to 56 bhp, a slimmer body (same width as the 7 series) and popular for its sporty driving characteristics. In total, around 760, 000 units were built.
