Description

1927 Rolls Royce 20hp Barker Barrel Sided Tourer.

Chassis Number: GHJ81

Registration Number: YT192

Highly original & a beautiful example of Barkers finest barrel sided open touring coachwork. This is an unmolested original car with original coachwork that we sold to the current octogenarian owner decades ago. The onset of old age now dictates the need for him to pass it on to its next custodian.

This is a well patinated car & frankly is all the better for it. The paint polishes up & presents well overall in very dark green over black. To the interior is black partly original leather. The car has original bare wood floor boards front & rear. Under the drivers seat is a barker stamp for body number: 5461 further confirmed by a Barker body plaque in the rear passenger side door jamb refelcting the same body number. The windscreen is of the split fold open type allowing for a pleasant breeze to wash over the front seat occupants.

The car has a good black hood that is easily erected & secured by two thumb type screws. A full length split tonneau cover comes with the car as do a full set of side screens stowed in a recess behind the drivers seat. Barker patent dipping lamps were installed when new & are operated by a lever falling conveniently to the drivers right hand next to the 4 speed gear change.

Various mechanical works have been done under the current ownership to keep the car in excellent road order. A new correct honeycomb radiator core was fabricated & fitted by Anglia Radiators who specialize in such work. A full rewire in correct colour coded cloth cable was undertaken by noted specialist Phil Cordery prior to the current ownership. The fuse box has its correct spin off finger nuts along with factory fitted spring washers to keep then in situ.

The car runs extremely well with the temperature staying very very low & the oil pressure always at the highest point on the gauge. When new this car was billed by Barker as a "Deluxe" model due to the twin spares being fitted; one to the rear & one to the running board. A small tool box is recessed into the drivers side running board containing an assortment of original small tools.

The lack of appreciable wear to the throttle pedal would indicate this to be a lower mile chassis. Indeed the current owner has done around 2000 miles during his years long tenure. The car starts readily & trots along B roads at 40 to 50MPH well at home in modern traffic. The dash has the usual quota of instruments & additionally has a very nice example of a ST Christopher good luck medal to ensure safe trouble free motoring. The original undertrays are found in the engine bay along with the expected Lucas oil can. Original oil caked Wefco leather gaiters cover the leaf springs. A klaxon & a bulb type horn are fitted as are period mirrors to either side.

All in all this is a delightful car to drive made all the better by its stylish Barker coachwork so often imitated by later builders. Its very slightly oily rag patina adds to rather then detracting from the charm of the car. A set of modern carpets might be advantageously added to cover the floor boards with a view to creature comforts by the future owner or alternatively just run it as is. Indicated miles are 94, 576
