Something of a pet project for Aston Martin Lagonda chairman David Brown, the four-door Rapide was launched at the 1961 Earls Court Motor Show. Styled by Touring of Milan, it was available to special order only. Intended to appeal to those who would otherwise be contemplating a Bentley Continental, a price tag of £4, 950 ensured its exclusivity. Equipped with servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, the Lagonda's advanced chassis also boasted a torsion bar suspended De Dion rear axle (later adopted for the DBS / V8 models) and a 3, 995cc DOHC straight-six engine (soon to be borrowed by the DB5). In production for just three years, a mere 55 Rapides are thought to have been despatched by the works.
