Lotus Elan S4: Light and racy British icon - Restored, ready to seduce. A classic car is a passion, but it's also about memories; for me, the Lotus Elan will always be Emma Peel's (Diana Rigg) car in the series "Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir". It is the symbol of an era, of British elegance and modernity. The Lotus Elan embodies one of Lotus founder Colin Chapman's masterpieces: a light, lively car with a formidably efficient chassis. Produced between 1962 and 1973, the Elan marked its era and influenced many modern sports cars - even inspiring the Mazda MX-5. The S4 version, produced between 1968 and 1972, represented the technical and aesthetic culmination of the Elan model. It benefited from a number of improvements over previous versions: a more refined finish, greater reliability and improved build quality - while retaining the charm and lightness for which the model was renowned. The car presented here is a coupé (FHC) and was delivered new in Switzerland in 1971. Originally yellow, it was repainted first in English green, then in white. Its current owner is a great connoisseur of the brand, having owned several models, from the Europe to the Elise, via the Seven. He acquired this Elan in 1994 and completely restored it in 2023. The car has a complete restoration file with invoices and photos, as well as a set of parts. It was registered in France until its return to Switzerland in 2023. It has not been driven much since. Its last French roadworthiness test expired in May 2025.
The future buyer will still have to carry out some minor work: adjusting the carburettor, connecting the rev counter to the new electronic ignition and bringing the handbrake up to standard (for Switzerland).
