L’atelier des 1000 is pleased to offer for sale the archetype of the English Roadster itself: this Lotus Elan S4 is a 70s model and the culmination of the lineage.
The Elan perfectly embodies Colin Chapman’s philosophy with its 115 hp and under 700 kg on the scales, thanks to its fiberglass shell; the slogan “Light is Right” takes on full meaning behind the wheel of this civilised racing barchetta.
The example we present has been meticulously maintained and has required substantial spend in recent years. A file of invoices accompanies the vehicle along with various period documents and its workshop manual.
Mechanically, the whole unit performs brilliantly: the Twin Cam 1600 engine is healthy, starts easily with no noise or smoke, and the revs rise cleanly.
The cooling system features an aluminium radiator and an additional Revotech fan for extra peace of mind.
The 4-speed gearbox is in very good condition; gear changes are precise and effortless.
The transmission system has been upgraded to replace the Rotoflex with driveshafts. The differential has been overhauled on this occasion.
The exhaust is stainless steel and has been replaced recently.
The underframes are in very good condition.
The chassis is excellent and shows no signs of prior impacts or corrosion.
All running gear performs superbly; braking is handled by four disc brakes and the whole system was recently overhauled (calipers, discs, aviation-type hoses, master cylinder), providing perfect balance.
The steering is via a rack-and-pinion, particularly precise and contributing strongly to the pleasure of driving.
As for the suspensions, the springs and shock absorbers are recent; the latter are by SPAX and perform effectively while offering more precision than original.
The paintwork presents well and has good gloss; only minor cosmetic defects typical of fibreglass bodies are to be noted.
The bumpers are in good condition and all chrome trim is brilliantly shiny.
The interior is harmonious; the upholstery is pristine and the dashboard shows no fissures.
The wooden dashboard displays an overall patina that suits it perfectly, and the original steering wheel is in very good condition.
The vinyl soft top is in perfect condition and a hood cover is supplied.
All of the instruments work, as do the electric windows and the famous pop-up headlights.
Given the condition and configuration of this Elan, we are asking €34, 990. Part exchange possible.
