The Atelier des 1000 is pleased to offer for sale the very archetype of the English roadster; this Lotus Elan S4 is a 1970 model year and the culmination of the line.
The Elan perfectly illustrates Colin Chapman’s philosophy with 115 hp and under 700 kg on the scales thanks to its fibreglass body, and the slogan “Light is Right” takes on its full meaning behind the wheel of this civilised racing barchetta.
The example we present has been meticulously maintained and has required substantial expenditure in recent years. An archive of invoices accompanies the vehicle along with various period documents and its workshop manual.
Mechanically the whole thing performs superbly: the Twin Cam 1600 engine is healthy, it starts easily with no noise or smoke and the revs rise cleanly.
Cooling has been equipped with an aluminium radiator and an additional Revotech fan for greater peace of mind.
The four-speed gearbox is in very good condition; gear changes are precise and effortless.
The drivetrain has been upgraded to replace the Rotoflex system with drive shafts. The differential has been overhauled on this occasion.
The exhaust is stainless steel and was replaced recently.
The underpinnings are in very good condition. The chassis is excellent and shows no signs of prior impact or corrosion.
All running gear performs superbly, braking is provided by four discs and the whole system was refurbished recently (calipers, discs, braided hoses, master cylinder); it is perfectly balanced.
The steering is by rack-and-pinion, particularly precise and it greatly contributes to the pleasure of driving.
As for the suspension, the springs and dampers are recent, the latter are by Spax and perform effectively, adding more precision than original.
The paintwork presents well with a bright finish; only a few minor cosmetic defects typical of fibreglass bodies are to be noted.
The bumpers are in good condition and all the chrome is brilliantly gleaming.
The interior is harmonious, the upholstery is pristine and the dashboard shows no cracks.
The wooden dashboard features an overall patina that suits it perfectly, while the original steering wheel is in very good condition.
The vinyl hood is in perfect condition and a hood cover is supplied.
All of the instrumentation functions, as do the electric windows and the famous pop-up headlights.
Given the condition and specification of this Elan, we are asking €32, 990. Part exchange considered.
