The Atelier des 1000 is pleased to offer for sale the very archetype of the English Roadster: this Lotus Elan S4 is a 1970s model and the culmination of the lineage.
The Elan perfectly illustrates Colin Chapman’s philosophy with its 115 hp and under 700 kg on the scales thanks to its fibreglass shell; the slogan “Light is Right” takes on full meaning behind the wheel of this civilised race-bred barquette.
The specimen we present has been meticulously maintained and has incurred numerous expenses in recent years. A file of invoices accompanies the vehicle as well as various period documents and its workshop manual.
Mechanically the whole thing performs superbly: the Twin Cam 1600 engine is healthy, it starts easily without noise or smoke and the revs come up cleanly.
Cooling has been equipped with an aluminium radiator and an additional Revotech fan for greater reliability.
The 4-speed gearbox is in very good condition, gear changes are precise and effortless.
The transmission system has been improved to replace the Rotoflex with drive shafts. The rear axle has been overhauled on the occasion.
The exhaust is stainless steel and has been replaced recently.
The subframes are in very good condition. The chassis is in excellent condition and shows no signs of previous damage or corrosion.
All the running gear performs perfectly, braking is provided by four disc brakes and the whole system has been fully rebuilt recently (calipers, discs, aviation hoses, master cylinder), it is perfectly balanced.
The steering is via a rack-and-pinion, particularly precise and it greatly enhances the pleasure of driving.
As for the suspension, the springs and shock absorbers are recent; the dampers are by Spax and perform effectively while adding more precision than originally.
The paintwork presents well and has good brightness; only minor cosmetic flaws typical of fibreglass bodies are to be noted.
The bumpers are in good condition and all chrome was brilliantly gleaming.
The interior is harmonious, the upholstery is in excellent order and the dashboard shows no cracks.
The wooden dashboard carries an overall patina that suits it perfectly; the original steering wheel is in very good condition.
The vinyl hood is in perfect condition and a hood cover is supplied.
All instrumentation works as do the electric windows and the famous Pop-up headlights.
Given the condition and configuration of this Elan, we are asking for €32, 990. Part exchange and trade-ins considered.
