Lot 175
1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3. 8-Litre 'Flat Floor' Roadster
Registration no. HVS 382
Chassis no. 850112
Stored for many years prior to 2022
Only 734 miles recorded since 1993
Extensive recent recommissioning by Moss Jaguar
Originally, and unusually, this E-Type was delivered new in Carmen Red with matching upholstery. Chassis 850112, this original right-hand drive flat floor was built in September 1961, however it has a recessed footwell added on the drivers side. Dealers Rossleigh Ltd of Newcastle-upon-Tyne supplied the E-Type to its first owner, a Mr George Tait of Marlborough House, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Numerous owners came and went before an extended period of family ownership commenced in 1992, when it was acquired by the former keepers husband from Horner & West of Pontefract, part-exchanged for his Series 3 E-Type. At that time, it had been fully restored and the interior retrimmed in more conventional black leather and assigned the numberplate PA 1. Between 1992 and 2006 the Jaguar was regularly MoTd but hardly used, with the 1993 MoT recording a little under 71, 500 miles. The current odometer reading is 72, 234, indicating that this E-Type has enjoyed an extended period of virtual hibernation.
Between 2006 and 2019 the E-Type was taken off the road and stored. In 2019 ownership passed to the previous keepers wife when he passed away. In 2022 the Jaguar was offered for auction straight from storage and was acquired by the current owner. At that time, noted E-Type specialist, William Heynes, inspected the car on 5th April 2022, and his report confirms that the car is fitted with a later engine, and the main tub is from a later Series 1 Roadster, however, it has been modified to the original specification.
Over £13, 000 has since been spent with Moss Jaguar to fully recommission this remarkable E Type ready for use (all the original parts have been retained and are in boxes). It is reported boast upgraded brakes, cooling system, speed sensitive power steering, ignition system, and alternator as well as a clutch and slave cylinder upgrade, new brakes and tyres.
According to our vendor: In short, its a E Type that you can really use, and go on long comfortable runs with. The touring upgrades make a huge difference to the drive quality, ride quality and general experience, and so she will cruise happily on the motorway at 70mph at only 2, 700rpm.
Accompanying documentation includes a current V5C confirming the cars Historic Vehicle status and its associated MoT exemption and VED zero rating in the UK. Nevertheless, the car has an advisory-free MoT valid until April 2026. A number of earlier MoT copies are present together with a vehicle information sheet obtained from Jaguar Cars in 1992 providing an extract of the factory build records. Other highlights include the original buff logbook; some original invoices from the early 1990s; and a 2001 copy of the E-Type Register directory.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
