Engine ex-official Works Team
San Remo Rally 1975
Detailed restoration between 2016 and 2017
Presented in 1965, the Lancia Fulvia Coupé radically transformed the sporting destiny of the Turin-based marque. Rapidly evolving through the “HF” versions and, subsequently, the iconic 1600 HF “Fanalone”, the car became the cornerstone of Cesare Fiorio’s Works Team. Thanks to a 1. 6-litre engine capable of up to 165 bhp in race configurations, the Fulvia dominated international stages, winning the World Championship for Makes in 1972 and 1974. Legendary drivers such as Sandro Munari and Harry Källström wrote pages of history at its wheel, cementing Lancia’s reputation before the advent of mythical models like the Stratos and the Delta. Beyond performance, the Fulvia represented a fundamental evolutionary leap, marking the transition to the golden era of modern rallying. With over 4, 900 examples produced across road and rally variants, the model remains a piece of automotive history today, celebrated for its mechanical elegance and for an enviable honour roll in an era when driver talent was the real key to success.
The car on offer is a rare testament to this glorious past. Equipped with an ex-official team engine (number 818540 VAR 1016), believed to originate from the car that won the 1970 Austrian Rally, this vehicle boasts a unique pedigree. Its competitive history includes participation in the 1975 San Remo Rally, where, driven by Delfino and DeNegri, it finished 33rd. After documented ownership spanning decades, the vehicle has undergone a total restoration, completed this year, to restore it to its original splendour. The work included a complete strip-down, body repairs and a meticulous mechanical rebuild: every component, from the engine with revised valves and pistons to the original carburettors, up to the close-ratio gearbox and the new competition clutch, has been attended to to ensure maximum reliability. The suspension, with revised Koni dampers, and the braking system have also been fully renewed. Thanks to the complete documentation and its rare provenance, this Fulvia 1600 HF is not just a classic car, but a collectible ready to return to racing.
