Description
The MG B GT is among the most recognisable post-war British sports cars, produced by MG between 1965 and 1980 as the closed-roof counterpart to the MGB roadster. Styled by Pininfarina, the GT variant combined elegant fastback lines with practical grand touring capability, earning a reputation for versatility both on road and in competition.
Offered here is a striking example first registered in October 1967, presented in white and accompanied by a rich and purposeful history. Having had eight previous owners, the car has enjoyed long-term custodianship with its current owner since 1989, a period during which it has been extensively developed and campaigned in competitive motorsport.
For over two decades this MG B GT has been actively prepared and used as a competition car, remaining in racing service until 2006. In 2008 it underwent a comprehensive reengineering programme to hill climb and sprint specification, emerging as a highly focused and capable machine. At its heart lies a 1950cc engine built by renowned MG specialist Peter Burgess, equipped with a Weber 45 DCOE carburettor and delivering approximately 148 brake horsepower depending on final tune. Power is transmitted through a robust four-speed Ford-type gearbox with ratios of 2. 74, 1. 81, 1. 26 and 1. 0, providing strong and reliable performance suited to competitive use.
The drivetrain is further enhanced by a banjo rear axle fitted with a Quaife limited slip differential and uprated half shafts supplied by Peter May, ensuring durability and traction under demanding conditions. The suspension has been comprehensively uprated, featuring lowered and stiffened front springs with enhanced dampers, complemented by a one-inch anti-roll bar with strengthened mountings. At the rear, reverse eye springs are paired with AVO adjustable shock absorbers and revised mounting brackets to optimise geometry, along with adjustable anti-tramp bars to maintain stability under acceleration.
Braking performance has been correspondingly improved, with uprated front discs and calipers and a rebuilt rear system tailored to the car’s handling characteristics. Weight reduction has been a key focus, with fibreglass panels fitted to the front wings, bonnet, valances and tailgate, while Perspex is used for the side and rear windows, retaining a glass windscreen for clarity and compliance.
Inside, the car is purpose-built, featuring a Tillet racing seat and a full roll cage, alongside a plumbed-in Lifeline fire extinguisher system for safety. A new 20-litre fuel tank has been installed, supporting its continued use in competition environments.
This MG B GT stands as a multi-record holder in the MG Speed Championship for both hill climbs and sprint events, testament to its meticulous preparation and proven performance. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a well-developed and historically competitive example of this iconic British coupe, equally suited to continued motorsport use or as a distinctive addition to a serious collection.
