Description

This superb, subtly upgraded home-market Triumph TR5 PI represents the ultimate specification TR for long-distance European touring, organised events and regular, confident use. Built on 9th February 1968 and supplied new from Birmingham on 21st March 1968, the car was registered MOK 129F and today retains its original ‘buff’ logbook along with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Heritage Certificate, affirming its provenance.

The TR5 has been in the hands of its most recent owners for almost twenty years, during which time it has covered close to 31, 000 miles. It has been used exactly as a car of this calibre should be — touring extensively across Europe, with memorable journeys to Croatia, Prague, The Netherlands and Paris. On organised continental tours, the car even participated in sections of regulated rallying, earning class awards along the way. A particular highlight was a visit to the Le Mans Classic, where the Triumph enjoyed a scenic lap of the circuit prior to the race meeting — a fitting experience for such a charismatic British sports car.

The comprehensive history file reflects meticulous maintenance throughout its long-term ownership, ensuring the car was always prepared for its next adventure. Prior to this period, the TR5 had been the subject of an exceptional body-off rebuild to an impressively high standard by Triumph specialist TRGB Ltd of Cambridgeshire. Photographic records show the car in rolling chassis form, a stripped bare-metal bodyshell and a fully dismantled engine, evidencing the thoroughness of the restoration. During the rebuild, the car was carefully uprated to enhance reliability, Some upgrades to include, alloy sump, unleaded cylinder head, updated driveshafts, high flow Bosch fuel pump, updated starter motor, overdrive logic box, and strengthened chassis. The differential was rebuilt, as was the gearbox.

The result is a truly glorious driving TR5 — powerful, responsive and perfectly suited to sustained continental mileage. It now combines the benefit of a high-quality rebuild with the proven reliability of a well-seasoned touring car that has been enjoyed and refined over thousands of miles.

Today, many years after its restoration, the car continues to present well. The chassis and bodyshell remain structurally excellent, the Signal Red paintwork retains a good finish with only minor age-related marks, and the chromework remains bright. The interior is well preserved, the engine bay is tidy, and the hood and wire wheels complement the car's classic appearance.

This is a fantastic example — superbly rebuilt, thoughtfully upgraded and properly used — offering reliable, highly enjoyable classic motoring with the credentials to tour Europe at a moment’s notice.
