Description

BMW Z1 2. 5 cat.

One of the most visionary and unique cars ever produced by BMW, the Z1 is a genuine travelling laboratory, the future vision according to the Bavarian marque: the Z in the name actually stands for "Zukunft", i. e. "Future" in German. It was created by the BMW Technik division, i. e. the research and development department.

Produced in a mere 8000 units between 1988 and 1991, today it’s a real must for enthusiasts of the badge and Youngtimers.

Some of the solutions proposed were never replicated again, making the Z1 a true one-off, while others later became standard on subsequent BMWs. Among the unique features we find the incredible doors: instead of
"opening" via hinges, the Z1’s doors "disappear", dropping electrically below the high entry sills. This allows a unique driving experience, evoking the little boats of the 1930s and 1940s.

Ingenious the choice for the bodywork: instead of costly, heavy and delicate sheet metal, every panel of the Z1 was made from special plastic materials mounted onto a galvanized steel frame. This not only provided a substantial weight saving, but also allowed the colour of the car to be changed in an hour; at least that is how the manufacturer described it at the launch: this solution was later adopted by Smart.

Aerodynamics were particularly well engineered, to the extent that it was one of the first mid-to-large production cars to use a flat underbody with an "extractor" moulded into the rear bumper, to create downforce without large spoilers and to improve airflow. The rear suspension, meanwhile, was a true debut that later became a big success across the BMW range: the famous Z-axle suspension, a sophisticated multi-link layout that offered noticeably better on-road handling than the BMW 3 Series E30 from which the rest of the mechanicals were derived.

Amidst all this innovation, the choice of engine and gearbox fell to the tried-and-tested 2. 5-litre inline-six, 170bhp, the same unit that powered the BMW 325i. Thanks to near-perfect weight distribution (49/ 51%) and a reasonably good drag coefficient (0. 36), performance is still impressive, with a top speed around 225 km/ h and a 0-100 km/ h time of about 7. 9 seconds.

The example we’re offering has always been Italian and is in perfect order. Original colour "BMW Urgrun metallic"; in keeping with BMW’s philosophy of changing colour at will, it was repainted Dakar Rally yellow for M3 E36, giving it a truly spectacular appearance. Preserved, with a genuine rarity first-aid kit, complete Z1 and accompanying, fully original; timing set done, serviced and shod.

Characteristic is the military-style upholstery on the seats that distinguished cars born green.

Hood is in order, beautiful and ready to use. CarVertical present and perfect.
