Description
Supplied new by John Cooper Garages in May 2001, this desirable Mini Cooper Sport 500 is finished in Anthracite with a contrasting Platinum Silver roof and bonnet stripes, over a black and Nickel Silver leather-trimmed interior. Power comes from a lively 1275cc multi-point injection engine producing around 62bhp through a four-speed manual transmission. Specification highlights include a bank of four Rallye-style fog and spot lamps, 13-inch Sportspack alloy wheels, a high level brake light, alloy interior trim and an engine-turned finish dashboard with chrome bezel gauges. The glovebox houses the all-important ‘Last 500’ plaque, denoting its status as one of the final Minis produced.
Currently displaying 59, 510 miles, this example has had just two owners from new. The most recent custodian has owned the car for the past 20 years, having purchased it from a close friend. For much of this time, the Mini has been mothballed in a dry garage, safely tucked away. Their decision to part with the car came solely from a need to repurpose the garage space and having no alternative dry storage available.
As a result of long-term careful storage, the Mini presents as a highly original and well-preserved example. Relative to its mileage, this is one of the most original and honest MPI Minis I have seen. The paintwork exhibits a consistent finish, while the glass, chromework and trim are all in excellent order. The panels appear straight and well-aligned, with correct gaps between the scuttle and tops of the wings. Both sides feature body-coloured vented sills, and the original factory ‘body’ number is present on the bonnet slam panel. The inner wings display uniform spot welds, while the chassis number is correctly etched into both front and rear screens, as well as stamped into the scuttle. While there are minor blemishes and signs of patina, including some bubbling on the scuttle and beneath the headlamps, the overall the condition is highly impressive and speaks to the car’s originality. All four alloy wheels are shod with new Yokohama A539 tyres.
Inside, the cabin is clean, inviting and very well presented, showing no visible tears to the seats, carpets or headlining. The condition belies the mileage, with the rear seats appearing barely used. Elsewhere, the boot and undercarriage are in commendable condition.
Having just been serviced, the Mini drives wonderfully. The 1275cc engine feels strong and responsive, pulling cleanly through all four gears without any crunches upon changes.
Accompanying the car is a history file dating back to first registration, including the original John Cooper Garages bill of sale, stamped service book and ‘Last 500’ certificate.
A highly original, honest and well-preserved example - very much a purist’s Mini.
