Description
Finished in an evocative Tartan Red, this 1972 MG B captures the enduring charm of one of Britain’s most beloved classic sports cars. First registered in April 1972, this example presents with a rich and traceable history, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a well-documented and carefully maintained motor car that reflects both authenticity and thoughtful stewardship across the decades.
Having passed through the hands of six previous owners, the car benefits from a continuous paper trail that includes previous V5 documentation tracing its lineage back to the original keeper. Accompanying the vehicle are spare keys, period MG B sales literature and magazine material, along with an extensive collection of MOT certificates recording mileage over the years—painting a clear and reassuring picture of its life on the road.
A significant chapter in this car’s story is its comprehensive restoration carried out between 1989 and 1990. This was no superficial refresh, but a thorough and considered rebuild. The bodywork was treated to new heritage front wings and a bare metal respray in its current Tartan Red finish, complemented by re-chromed original bumpers, new lighting throughout, and a replacement windscreen. Mechanical and structural elements were equally attended to, with suspension and steering overhauled, new brakes fitted, and key electrical components—including starter motor, alternator, and distributor—renewed. The addition of halogen headlamps, a car radio, and an alarm system enhanced both usability and security.
Inside, the cabin was brought up to a high standard with a replacement dashboard and trim, new door panels, armrests, carpets, and reupholstered seats finished in velour. New gauges and head restraints complete an interior that balances period character with refreshed comfort.
Mechanically, the engine was recommissioned under previous ownership, with further attention given to the radiator, heater unit, hoses, throttle and clutch cables, and a new clutch assembly. A stainless steel exhaust and manifold were installed, along with a new petrol tank. More recently, in 2014, a new fuel pump was fitted, and in 2020 the car received a new half tonneau hood cover.
The history file is extensive and highly impressive, containing invoices that substantiate the restoration work and document consistent maintenance and servicing from 1989 through to the present day, including routine items such as oil and filter changes. Completing the package, the original tools remain in place in the boot beneath the spare wheel—an often-missing detail that adds to the car’s authenticity.
This MG B represents a compelling blend of classic British motoring heritage, careful restoration, and ongoing care. It is a car that not only looks the part but tells a well-documented story, making it equally suited to the enthusiast collector or those seeking an engaging and stylish entry into classic motoring.
