Lot 21
1992 Moto Guzzi 1000SE
Registration no. J761 RJT
Frame no. VV50709
Engine no. VV50681
Introduced for 1990, Moto Guzzi's retro-styled 1000S was in effect a naked Le Mans V, its elegant black and red livery evoking memories of the 750 S and S3 models of the mid-1970s, particularly when ordered with wire-spoked wheels. Despite its undeniably good looks, the 1000S sold in limited numbers, only 1, 205 were made between 1990 and the final year of production in 1993.
In 1992, Moto Guzzi had launched the 1000SE, a limited edition version of the 1000S built specifically for the UK market. The SE was finished in red and came with a small bikini fairing/ fly screen (like this example) or a full fairing. All were badged '1000S' and all had spoked wire wheels.
This Moto Guzzi 1000SE was imported by Three Cross Motorcycles and first registered for road use on 3rd March 1992. Notable features include Lafranconi Moto Guzzi exhaust silencers and stainless steel 'H' mid section, believed to be options from new.
The first owner improved reliability by fitting a Lucas RITA electronic ignition system. He also removed the carburettors' stiff external springs and installed medium weight internal springs which were found to function better, making the throttle action lighter. In addition, the front engine mounting bolt has been removed and greased.
Owned and cherished by the same family for the last 25 years, the machine has been used during finer weather and serviced regularly. Every effort has been made to retain originality as much as possible while also ensuring that the machine remains serviceable. The red paintwork is original except for the side panels, which were refinished around 10 years ago. Notable servicing/ maintenance events include the following:
In 2011 at 44, 019km brake hoses upgraded to braided black HEL brake lines. High pressure oil line splitter between crankcase and cylinder heads changed to stainless braided hose. New front wheel rim laced to original hub with stainless spokes and larger chrome plated brass *******. New wheel bearings front and rear. Many rubber parts changed as required including fuel tank mounts, inlet rubbers and breather hoses.
2016 at 53, 190km front forks were fitted with new seals and dust covers.
2020 at 58, 096km both carburettors dismantled and cleaned. Rebuilt with new gaskets and seals plus new medium springs, new accelerator pump diaphragms/ springs and filters (new RamAir filters). Oil filter in sump changed.
2021 at 59, 333km swinging arm removed and refinished in black powder coat. On reassembly fitted with new gearbox output seal, new universal joint, new U/ J carrier bearing, new swinging-arm bearings and seals, new rubber boot. New radial bearing and seals to clutch pushrod.
