Introduced in 1970, the Yamaha YDS7 was the final evolution of Yamaha's highly successful YDS series and the direct forerunner to the iconic RD range. Totally redesigned, the YDS7 featured a new frame inspired by that of the RD56 Grand Prix racer and shared little with the superseded YDS6. Combining lightweight handling with a spirited 247cc parallel-twin engine, the YDS7 offered performance well beyond its class and helped cement Yamaha's reputation for producing exciting, rider-focused motorcycles.
According to the vendor, this YDS7 was discovered by the previous owner during a house clearance where it had remained untouched for decades. It is almost completely original and retains the vast majority of its factory components, including the original Yokohama tyres, which remarkably still hold air. Although there is no documentary evidence present to verify the mileage, the vendor is confident that it is genuine, and it is clear on close inspection that it has seen very little use, with many of the components exhibiting little to no wear. Having spent a considerable period in storage, it now presents as an honest and unrestored survivor.
At the time of consignment, the engine was found to turn over freely with strong compression. We are advised by the vendor that it has recently been started following the fitting of a new battery, spark plugs, plug caps and ignition coils (the original coils are included), together with a cleaning of the carburettors. However, the machine will likely require thorough recommissioning before regular road use.
This YDS7 is in UK specification and was originally supplied by Eddy Grimstead of London but was never registered with the DVLA. Having been hidden away for over 50 years, a NOVA1 declaration was submitted by the vendor to make HMRC aware of its existence. It is offered with an Aircooled RD Owners Club dating certificate, together with a NOVA number and the supporting paperwork required to facilitate registration with the DVLA on an age-related registration number.
Combining exceptional originality, an amazing 79 miles from new, and an intriguing backstory, this YDS7 represents a rare opportunity to acquire what must surely be one of the lowest-mileage surviving examples in existence.
