Flagship of what was retrospectively known as the MKIV range, the Jaguar 3½ Litre Saloon entered production in January 1946. Equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, Burman worm-and-nut steering and Girling mechanical drum brakes, the four-seater was powered by a 3485cc OHV (125bhp/ 184lbft) straight-six engine and promised 90mph plus performance. Utilising the same all-steel body construction as its late 1930s SS Jaguar forebear, the newcomer appeared even sleeker thanks to a revised hypoid bevel back axle that allowed the floor to be lowered by two inches. Nicknamed the `Wardour Street Bentley’, just 3, 605 MKIV 3. 5 Litre Saloons were built to right-hand drive specification.
According to a letter on file from the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, chassis 610708 was built to right-hand drive specification with body B3958 and engine S706. Remaining a ‘matching numbers’ car today, the Jaguar has self-evidently been the subject of much past restoration work. Finished in striking Black over Aubergine with Purple leather upholstery, the MKIV spent many years in The Netherlands. Issued with a Dutch Certificate of Roadworthiness in 2016 and advertised for €60, 000 two years ago, the Saloon was still resident there when the vendor acquired it from the estate of ‘a marque fanatic’. Issued with the distinctive age-related number plate ‘XXS 575’ since being repatriated to these shores, the four-seater has also been entrusted to the Classic Car Clinic of Devon where it benefited from a new cylinder head, top-end engine overhaul, refurbished steering column and attention to the seat fixings. Sensibly uprated with an electric choke and additional cooling ***, the MKIV also boasts a working sunshine roof. Worthy of close inspection, this handsome Jaguar is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, original instruction book, spare parts / service manuals, Dutch / UK bills and spare keys.
