An undisputedly fine motorcar, the Graham Hull-designed Silver Seraph represented Rolls-Royce’s determination to reaffirm its position at the pinnacle of luxury motoring. Introduced in March 1998 at the Geneva Show, the Silver Seraph has gone down in history as the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royce. Following a lengthy development programme that began in the late 1980s, the model remained in production for just four years (1998-2002), during which only 1, 570 examples were built at Crewe (1, 382 standard-wheelbase and 188 long-wheelbase cars). Of those, just 369 were right-hand-drive standard-wheelbase examples. Rolls-Royce claimed its monocoque bodyshell was 65 per cent stiffer than that of the Silver Spirit it replaced, its steel monocoque being fabricated using some 6, 500 laser-guided spot welds. Equipped with all-round double-wishbone independent suspension, a ‘digital-adaptive-hydraulic-damping-system’ (complete with automatic ride height control) and ABS-modulated vented disc brakes it proved a thoroughly enjoyable drive. Crafted from the finest leather hides, wood veneers and deep-pile carpets available, its cabin was wonderfully cosseting.
Power came from a BMW-derived, all-alloy 5. 4-litre V12 developing 322bhp, making it the firm’s first V12-powered model since the Phantom III of 1939. Tempered by Automatic Stability Control (ASC) electronics, the Seraph was still capable of zapping from 0-60mph in 6. 9 seconds before topping out at a governed 140mph. Sharing its basic structure with the contemporary Bentley Arnage, the Silver Seraph nevertheless remained firmly focused on refinement, comfort and effortless luxury.
Registering c. 36, 000 miles from new this example was subject to a full repaint and colour change from blue to grey in 2017. With just 2 former keepers recorded on HPI, it benefited from attention to its braking system in 2018 at the cost of c.£10, 000. Fitted with an aftermarket Alpine stereo ‘X273 RVVO’ is offered with a collection of invoices and current V5C document, it is noted that the driver’s side rear electric window does not work.
