Described as the car with grace, space, and pace, it was launched in May, 1957, initially with a choice of fixed-head and drophead coupé bodies and was followed nearly a year later by an open two-seater roadster. All cars used the same chassis as the XK140; however, the bodywork was masterfully reworked to give it a much more modern appearance and featured a one-piece curved windscreen for the first time. Internally, the walnut veneered dashboard and door cappings had been replaced with padded leather trim. Although it was mechanically similar to earlier generations, it was clearly much more muscular. One of the main improvements for the XK150 was the fitment of Dunlop disc brakes all-round as opposed to drums which were fitted to the XK140. The initial XK150s with the 3. 4-litre engine weren’t quite as potent as the proceeding XK140, so in spring, 1958, a new Special Equipment package was offered as an option to improve performance. The SE package included a B-type cylinder head with larger inlet and exhaust valves and larger 1. 75in. SU HD6 carburettors which boosted power in the 3. 4-litre to 210bhp from the ‘standard’ 190bhp. From October, 1959, the model received another improvement, with the introduction of the larger displacement 3. 8-litre engine which again raised power to some 220bhp. The majority of XK150s were supplied in left-hand drive form, so just 1, 367 XK150s were supplied as right-hand drive machines in fixed-head form. Seemingly a two-owner car from new, this handsome XK150 SE is a very fortunate survivor, having been restored to its present attractive condition in quite recent years after roughly 45 years of abandonment. The original buff logbook confirms that chassis S825246DN was issued with the Essex registration ‘44 TTW’, painted green, and carried engine number VA1801-8. It was first registered on June 2nd, 1960, to Sydney Ronald Harrison of Tilbury, Essex. Mr. Harrison led something of a nomadic life, and the Jaguar travelled with him as he moved first to Thundersley in 1962, then crossed the Thames to Kent to reside at the Bull’s Head Hotel in Dartford in 1966, Rochester in 1970, and ultimately Sevenoaks in 1971. The Jaguar’s last tax, however, expired in 1967. Subsequent history is not recorded, but upon its discovery it was purchased by our vendor and his father, to be restored for the father’s private collection during the 2010s. As may be seen, it has not been over-restored, but retains a very pleasing patina. After a period of static display, it has recently been brought up to running order, and while some further recommissioning may be required, we see no reason why it should not be returned to the road 60 years after it fell out of use. The Jaguar was allowed to disappear from the DVLA’s records when the database was computerised, hence it is currently in need of registration, but the survival of the buff logbook should greatly aid the process of reregistering it, and being reallocated the ‘44 TTW’ number.
