Description

Speedbroker is incredibly proud to represent what, in our opinion, is a very fine and highly desirable example of one of the most important British sports cars ever produced. This 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3. 8 Roadster has undergone an exceptional, extensively documented restoration, transforming the car from the project pictured in our history file into the beautiful example offered today.

THE CAR

An early Series 1 3. 8-litre Open Two Seater, accompanied by its Jaguar Heritage documentation and an extensive history and restoration file. The 3. 8 Series 1 is widely regarded as one of the most desirable versions of the E-Type, combining the purity of the original design with the legendary Jaguar XK straight-six.

Key details include:

1963 Jaguar E-Type
Series 1
3. 8-litre XK straight-six
Open Two Seater / Roadster
Left-hand drive from new
Originally supplied through Jaguar Cars, New York
Jaguar Heritage Certificate
Chrome wire wheels
Black folding hood
Beautiful pale metallic blue exterior
AN EXTRAORDINARY RESTORATION

The restoration began in 2017 and was completed in 2021, with an extensive photographic and documentary record accompanying the car. This was considerably more than a cosmetic refurbishment. The car was stripped extensively and the restoration included:

Bare-metal body restoration
Extensive bodywork and metalwork
Full repaint
Engine dismantling and mechanical restoration
Front and rear suspension renovation
Rear axle restoration
Brake caliper refurbishment
Sandblasting and powder coating
Zinc plating and component refinishing
Extensive replacement mechanical and body components
Chrome restoration and replacement
Complete interior retrim
New leather and carpeting
New soft top and hood cover
Final detailing and protection
The restoration records document well in excess of 2, 700 hours of labour, together with a substantial parts programme. More importantly, the car comes with photographs showing the restoration progressing from the condition in which it was originally acquired through to the finished vehicle.

BUILT TO BE DRIVEN

Alongside the restoration, a number of carefully chosen improvements were incorporated to make the car considerably more usable without detracting from its character.

These include:

5-speed gearbox conversion
Electronic ignition
Uprated radiator
Upgraded cooling fan
Upgraded alternator within a period-style dynamo housing
Modern uprated starter motor
Stainless-steel exhaust system
Polybush suspension components
Kevlar brake pads
Uprated clutch components
Silicone hose kit
Rear crank oil-seal conversion
Uprated engine sump
Mahle pistons
Sports ignition coil
Carburettor cable conversion
Hazard warning system
Discreet audio / hands-free system
The result is an E-Type that retains the look and experience of an early Series 1, while being far better suited to modern touring and regular enjoyment.

HISTORY FILE

A particularly important aspect of this car is the documentation accompanying it. The file includes:

Jaguar Heritage Certificate
Extensive restoration photographs
Restoration invoices
Detailed progress reports
Mechanical invoices
Parts documentation
Upholstery records
Bodywork records
Documentation relating to the upgrades and 5-speed conversion
The before-and-after photographs alone tell quite a story.

WHY THIS E-TYPE?

The E-Type needs very little introduction.

Few cars have become such universally recognised pieces of automotive design, and the early 3. 8 Series 1 Roadster remains one of the versions collectors consistently seek out. What makes this particular example especially appealing is that the difficult work has already been done.

The restoration is documented, the car has been sympathetically upgraded for usability, and its history file allows the next custodian to understand exactly how the finished car came to be.

In our opinion, this represents a very fine and highly desirable E-Type.

A beautiful example of the breed, with an extraordinary restoration story behind it and a substantial supporting file to document the process.

Available now through Speedbroker.

Full restoration file, photographic build record and Heritage documentation available for inspection.
