By the early 1970s, Yamaha had established an enviable reputation for producing lightweight, high-performance two-stroke motorcycles. While British manufacturers traditionally developed their 350cc machines by reducing the capacity of larger engines, the Japanese approach was rather different: enlarging successful 250cc designs to achieve a remarkable combination of light weight and performance.
The Yamaha R5 was an example of this approach. Developed from the YDS7, its 347cc air-cooled, piston-ported two-stroke twin produced approximately 36bhp, delivering lively acceleration and a maximum speed of 100mph. Weighing little more than 300lbs, the R5 offered exceptional handling. Produced between 1970 and 1972, it was succeeded by the now legendary reed-valve RD350.
This particularly attractive example was supplied new to the United Kingdom and first registered in August 1971. Built to European specification, it retains the correct rear light arrangement and matching frame and engine numbers. The Odometer shows 9, 390 recorded miles.
In recent years the Yamaha underwent a complete restoration by a noted Japanese motorcycle specialist. Considerable attention has been paid to authenticity, with correct Yamaha components and original Japanese fixings used throughout. The engine has been extensively rebuilt, including a reground crankshaft, rebored cylinders and new pistons.
Since completion, it has been used exclusively for display purposes, preserving the quality of the restoration.
A beautifully restored example of one of Yamaha's most engaging early sporting twins, this R5 offers a wonderful opportunity for the collector of classic Japanese motorcycles.
