Description
I am pleased to offer for sale this superb 1987 Volvo 240 GL Estate in rare gold coachwork and black leather interior. This is the desirable 2 litre engine variant with a manual 5 speed gearbox, and has a tow bar with twin electrics.
I bought this vehicle in December 2012 having looked for many months. The car had been owned by the same family from new and has an incredible 32 Volvo main dealer service stamps, all documented in a fully stamped service book with work sheets. The last service was done (by Volvo of course!) in October 2013 at 93157 miles and it is still covered by Volvo roadside assistance until October 2014.

The car now has a low 94785 miles and I have all the MOT’s and tax disc’s, including the first one the car wore when first registered! The car is taxed until the end of April 2014 and has an MOT until October 2014. The Volvo qualifies for Classic Car Insurance, I pay £120 fully comprehensive.
The bodywork is unmarked with no dents or rust. The underside has been wax oiled from new and this has obviously kept the rust at bay. The interior has beautiful black leather heated seats with deep buttons and unmarked throughout, no wear or rips. The carpets are as new having been protected by Volvo plastic tray mats.
Everything works including the central locking, headlight wash/ wipe and electric windows.
I removed the original 14 inch steel wheels and trims (which I still have) and replaced them with 15 inch alloys from a Volvo 940, so I could fit some decent Pirelli tyres. The spare is brand new and never been on the road.
I wanted the car to be perfect and drive like new so I replaced the following:
Replaced timing belt
Replaced clutch
Replaced all ignition parts, coli, leads, etc
Fitted 5 new Pirelli tyres and wheels
Replaced rear exhaust
Replaced bushes to rear suspension, rear axle, steady bar, etc
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced rear number plate lights and rear light clusters
Replaced various interior items, gear knob, switches etc.
Replaced shock absorbers front and rear
Replaced hand brake shoes
Strip out steering column and replaced springs and bushes
Replaced battery
Replaced fuel pump relay
Replaced faded number plates (originals have been kept)
Because of this work the Volvo drives like new and glides along effortlessly, it is truly a delightful place to be.
I have three sets of original Volvo keys, handbooks, service books and the original Volvo sales brochure.
When I bought the car it had a rather awful radio cassette which didn’t work particularly well so I replaced it with a period Panasonic radio cassette in keeping with the period.
Under the rear load area it is full of useful spares, fan belts, bulbs etc.
So why am I selling it? Well I collect cars that are in good condition with known and traceable history. I then improve them and play with them for a while before the wife looks around at the drive ordering me to sell a few or she will leave me. Obviously I wouldn’t want this to happen as she is part of the family now and the dog and I would miss her, and you know what they say ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’.
So if you want the best Volvo 240 out there to keep forever and enjoy you have found it!
