Description

This is my 1963 Peugeot BB1 ST moped.
I bought it in a very sorry state from an ad on eBay. After collecting it from South London it was stripped down to the very last nut and bolt just one day after it arrived at my workshop (shed).
It has been completely restored which involved completely replacing every nut and bolt and fixing.
On stripping the engine I found one piston ring was broken (even though it was running when I collected it!) so I bought a complete new piston, gudgeon pin and rings from Classic Moped Spares which were then fitted by Vince Prevett Motorcycles of Salisbury. He checked it all over for me and found the piston had been fitted the wrong way round at some point (hence the ring failure) so I'm pleased I asked him to do it not just reassemble it myself.
After de-rusting and de-mudding I used several gallons of rust killer and then rust preventing primer to give a good base for re painting. I cannot guarantee that the paintwork will last as it was SO rusty and was very difficult to get it perfect.
The paint is Ford Olympic Blue Hycote paint in rattle cans. Much better than the cheap rubbish normally available and a pretty good finish. One can of Ford Sierra beige completed the tank and engine fairings along with some gold pinstripe. Classic Moped Spares supplied new cotter pins and handgrips.
The Vintage Motorcycle Club supplied period Peugeot transfers for the tank.
The fuel tank was very rusty inside so it was de-rusted by filling with a mix of HG rust remover and water and left for 48 hours. I have also fitted an in-line fuel filter, just in case!
New pedals were bought from France as old ones were bent out of recognition by someone. It also has an original rear lamp from the correct period also bought from France. The fuel filler cap is also a replacement as it did not have a filler cap, horn or speedometer/ odometer when I bought it. It still has no speedo, just a blanking plate. The horn is a BSA bulb horn (MOT legal for pre-1975).
Carrot Cycles in Lincoln made up a set of control cables from the original drawings and dimensions and they fitted perfectly first time.
It has been re-wired from positive earth to negative earth and LED headlight and tail-light bulbs fitted. Andrew Pattle of the East Anglian Cyclemotor club verified the age as 1963 and supplied a dating certificate so that an age-related registration can be issued by the DVLA. This moped is not registered and as yet has no MOT. I have no means of taking it to an MOT and it must be MOT’d to be registered.
The paint is as near as I can get to the original Peugeot Blue but bear in mind it is a “rattle can” paint job and therefore probably not up to professional standards. There is some very minor rust and pitting on the rear wheel rim but it has cleaned up remarkably well and looks OK. There is some rust on the handlebar brackets as these are difficult to find and therefore had to be cleaned up. The mileage is indeterminate but the engine seems to be in pretty good condition. It comes with a re-print of the original Owner’s Manual AND a workshop manual for repairs and re-builds. They are both in French so you’ll need Google Translate where the pictures aren’t any help. As it is a 1963 moped (i. e. nearly 55 years old) it comes with no guarantees or warranties, what you see is what you get. I can supply before and after pictures and photos of any particular part, if you wish. Use the “Contact the Seller” facility. The brakes are only OK, not brilliant (they never were, even when they were new) and the lights are pretty feeble even with LED bulbs. I would advise only riding in good weather in daylight! That said it is a real head turner of a moped and it has been restored to what I think is a very high standard. These mopeds have individual personalities and they are sometimes difficult to start and need constant maintenance. You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use it. If you don’t have that then please don’t bid. I would hate to see all my hard work languishing in the back of a shed! This is a relatively rare vehicle whose value is not necessarily based on any pre-set price. I repeat this moped is not registered and has no MOT. It DOES come with a Dating Certificate from the EACC and that makes it relatively easy to apply for an age-related registration. I do have a completed V55/ 5 to use as an example. I have not started it since the rebuild but I have no reason to believe it won’t run perfectly.
