Description

Model history:

The Ferrari BB512, first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1976, marks a significant evolution in the mid‑rear‑engined berlinetta lineage of the prancing horse. It succeeds the 365 GT4 BB, the first road Ferrari with a flat‑12 mid‑mounted engine, inspired by Formula 1.

The name BB stands for Berlinetta Boxer, although the engine is actually a flat‑12 and not a true “boxer.” The number 512 refers to its 5‑litre displacement and 12 cylinders. Unlike the 365 BB, the BB512 uses a dry sump, a technology inherited from competition, which improves lubrication under demanding use and allows a lower centre of gravity. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 5‑speed manual gearbox. This gearbox offers dynamic handling befitting its sporting image.

With styling by Pininfarina, blending elegance and aggression, the BB512 presents a low, taut silhouette typical of grande routières of the 1970s. At the time, it stood as the direct rival to the Lamborghini Countach. Yet it retained Ferrari’s own personality: more refined, more balanced, but equally exclusive.

Produced between 1976 and 1981, the carburetted BB512 was built in only 929 units, making it a rare and highly sought‑after model for collectors today. It was later replaced by the BB512i, fitted with electronic fuel injection.

Symbolising an era when performance went hand in hand with artisanal elegance, the BB512 remains a major piece in Ferrari’s history, combining cutting‑edge technology, pure aesthetics and unparalleled driving sensations.

History of this carburetted BB512:

Delivered new in Italy in 1980, this BB512 was acquired by its second Italian owner in 1986, who kept it carefully until 2015, when we acquired it. It was then sold to a French enthusiast, its third and current owner. Recently returned from Italy, it has undergone a complete engine restoration at Maranello and now carries Ferrari Classiche certification.

Bodywork:

The coachwork is in excellent condition, perfectly sound, with exemplary door and bonnet gaps. The paint shows a beautiful patina, with no scratches or dents.

Interior:

The cabin is superb: the original black leather is in excellent condition, door panels have been replaced, and the original carpets are flawless. The headlining and rear of the seats are likewise original and well preserved.

Engine:

The original engine has been fully rebuilt by Tony in Maranello. It benefits from a new clutch, new belts, and an ignition loom replaced. A high‑quality mechanical restoration has been carried out, in line with the marque’s standards.

Gearbox:

Rebuilt at the same time as the engine, the gearbox shifts perfectly. Gears engage smoothly and precisely.

Running gear:

The road behaviour is impeccable. The front end is stable, with no anomalies or road noise to report. Suspension in excellent condition, delivering exemplary handling.

Brakes:

The brakes, recently overhauled, provide linear and effective braking, in keeping with a car of this standing.

Options:

- Air conditioning.
