A little history on this sublime car The 2006 Jaguar XK (internal code X150) marks an important stage in the brand's modern history. It is a model that embodies both a stylistic and technological revival for Jaguar. In the early 2000s, Jaguar, then owned by Ford (since 1989), was looking to reposition itself in the luxury coupé segment. The previous model, the Jaguar XK8 (X100), launched in 1996, was beginning to show the weight of the years, both technically and aesthetically. Ford therefore decided to inject significant resources into revitalising the brand, with one watchword: modernisation without betraying Jaguar's traditional elegance. Design: inspiration from Aston Martin and Ian Callum One of the major architects of the new XK is Ian Callum, Jaguar's design director from 1999. A former designer at Aston Martin, his influence is palpable in the lines of the XK. The design of the 2006 XK is: more fluid, athletic and muscular, with an oval grille reminiscent of classic Jaguars, clad in aluminium bodywork - a first for a production Jaguar of this type.
This choice of aluminium reduces weight (around 90 kg less than its predecessor) and improves both performance and agility. Platform and engineering The XK X150 is based on an all-aluminium monocoque platform, derived from developments on the XJ (X350). This was cutting-edge technology for its time, putting Jaguar on a par with (if not ahead of) the major German manufacturers. Engine at launch: 300bhp naturally-aspirated 4. 2L V8 6-speed ZF automatic transmission In 2007, Jaguar launched the XKR version, which featured an Eaton supercharger to boost power to 420bhp. Positioning and reception The XK was clearly aimed at rivals such as the Mercedes SL, BMW 6 Series and Porsche 911 (in its XKR version).
It was hailed for: its discreet, timeless elegance; its comfort and interior quality (wood trim, full-grain leather); its balanced road holding, more GT than truly sporting. Heritage Produced until 2014, the 2006 XK represents: the first modern Jaguar designed under Ian Callum; a technological milestone for the brand (aluminium, on-board electronics); and the forerunner of contemporary Jaguar styling, which would later be seen on the XF, XJ (X351) and then the F-Type.
