Description
Aston Martin AMV8 Volante 1979: British open-top elegance
Launched in 1978, the Aston Martin AMV8 Volante embodies the golden age of British grand touring. The 1979 model year is among the early Series and remains today one of the most sought-after by collectors.
At the time, Aston Martin aimed to offer a convertible capable of competing with the great American GTs, while retaining a distinctly British identity.
The result is a car that is powerful, refined and comfortable, built for long journeys as well as stylish outings.
An iconic naturally-aspirated V8
The V8 Volante inherits the taut, muscular lines of the V8 Coupé, penned by William Towns, while adding a perfectly integrated fabric hood. The styling remains understated, balanced and timeless, with an instantly recognisable road presence.
Under the bonnet, the Aston Martin AMV8 Volante is powered by the famous 5. 3-litre (5340 cc) V8, entirely designed by Aston Martin. Power is in the region of 300 hp, transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual or automatic gearbox.
This engine offers a deep, throaty note characteristic of Aston Martins of the era, and ample torque enabling smooth, elegant driving, true to the Grand Touring spirit.
A luxurious, handcrafted interior
As with all Aston Martins built at Newport Pagnell, the V8 Volante benefits from largely artisanal manufacture.
The cabin is trimmed in Connolly leather, burr walnut veneers, and Smiths instruments, creating a warm, luxurious atmosphere.
Each example features slightly different finishes, enhancing the unique character of every car.
Limited and sought-after production
The production of the Aston Martin V8 Volante Series 1 is estimated at around 240 units, produced between 1978 and 1980, making it a particularly rare model on the collector car market.
The Aston Martin V8 Volante perfectly represents Aston Martin's philosophy of that period:
controlled power, timeless elegance and handcrafted know-how. It appeals to both enthusiasts of prestige cars and collectors seeking a rare, usable, story-filled classic cabriolet.
History of this Aston Martin ** V8 Volante
Delivered new in the United States in 1979, this Aston Martin V8 Volante carries chassis number 15005. It is very likely the first V8 Volante delivered on the other side of the Atlantic.
We are currently researching to document its initial history more precisely. However, we trace it from 2014 in the Netherlands, where it has received regular and ongoing maintenance.
In 2016, it changed hands and arrived in France, before being acquired by its last owner in 2017.
It is therefore the 5th Aston Martin V8 Volante produced, a particularly rare and notable example.
Bodywork
The car was repainted dark blue a few years ago. The body is sound and presents very well. It naturally shows some signs of age, with no work required at this time.
Upholstery and hood
The upholstery was completely redone in the Netherlands in 2014 in an elegant beige shade, still in perfect condition today.
The navy blue fabric hood, and the beige mohair interior hood lining, were also redone at the same time.
Engine
The mechanicals have been regularly maintained by its various owners, with several major works carried out, notably:
- Radiator (2020)
- Carburettors (2019)
- Fuel pump (2017)
- Air conditioning (2016)
- Cooling system (2015)
Gearbox
Equipped with an automatic gearbox, this is well maintained. Gear changes are smooth and efficient.
