Description
EXCALIBUR ROADSTER SERIES 1 OF 1969.
Excalibur's history began in 1964 when the renowned industrial designer Brooks Stevens, then working as a consultant for Studebaker, was invited to design a show car for the New York Motor Show that year. A car aficionado and keen collector, Stevens idolised the pre‑war Mercedes-Benz SSK and pitched the idea of a “contemporary classic” version of the German sports car to Studebaker, then Mercedes’ importer. For the “Mercebaker”, Stevens used a modified Studebaker Daytona chassis, clad with a retro light-weight bodyshell. Built in only eight weeks, the Excalibur SS prototype was ready three days before the New York Auto Show where it made a splash, but too late to save the ailing Studebaker Corporation. A long list of potential buyers followed, one of whom — a Chevrolet dealer — asked if the car could be built with a Chevrolet engine. Stevens agreed. An advertisement in the Wall Street Journal generated deposits sufficient to commence production and, in 1966, the company moved into premises in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Excalibur found a whole new market for this retro style.
Iconic styling with a pointed grille, external exhaust pipes, and wire wheels.

There were even a few surprises among the growing list of buyers, Steve McQueen — better known for owning a highly sought XK SS — also owned one of these cars.
