Legendary classic that set the tone for the rest of the Porsche range, even with influences felt today

The Porsche 356 was Porsche’s first production car in large numbers. It was built from 1948 to 1965, laying the foundations for the legendary Porsche 911. Throughout its seventeen years of production, it fully convinced the public of the Porsche brand, as it does today.
Whether the 356 was the first Porsche or not is sometimes a matter of debate. Some reckon that the Porsche 64 was the first, while others prefer the 356. What is certain is that the 356 was the first Porsche to be produced commercially in significant numbers and truly aimed at a broader audience. It is also certain that the 356 was a great success, with its elegant coupe or cabriolet captivating many enthusiasts, resulting in excellent sales figures.
The Porsche 356, initially derived from the Volkswagen Beetle, was available in two bodystyles, coupe and cabriolet. In addition to the bodystyles, different variants were introduced to the market, reflecting the Porsche engineers’ relentless pursuit of perfection. The 356 was modified almost every year to offer an even better experience for customers. In 1948, the first model, the 356, was launched, the regular, original model. It was equipped with a 1. 1‑litre flat-four engine, which wasn’t particularly powerful, but the car’s design and driving feel attracted a lot of positive attention.
After a period of refinement, Porsche decided to continue developing the 356. In 1951, two more powerful flat-four engines, as well as variants of these engines, were introduced with displacements of 1. 3 litres and 1. 5 litres. This created a more commercial package, also attracting customers seeking more power.
In 1955, the original model was replaced by the Porsche 356 A. The new model brought light cosmetic changes, as is Porsche’s habit. A 1. 6‑litre flat engine joined the range, and with the arrival of the Porsche 356 B in 1959, it would replace all the other engines. With this new model, cosmetic and mechanical changes were again made, no detail left to chance at Porsche; a two‑litre boxer engine was also available for the Carrera model. In 1964, the final 356 model, the 356, came out, ensuring two very successful years of production. The 356 C was now fitted with disc brakes on all wheels, as well as different wheels.
The 356 was a reference for the design of the 911. A distant derivative of the Beetle, it allowed Porsche to establish its worldwide renown, and its clever design is the reason enthusiasts go totally nuts.
Porsche 356 BT6
The Porsche 356 BT6 is a variant of the B series of the 356. It appeared on the market in 1962, bringing visual changes in line with Porsche’s tradition of always innovating and improving. The rear grille behind the engine cover became twice as large, with two grilles instead of one, and the fuel filler cap was now at the front on the right.
The BT6 is a highly sought‑after version of the Porsche 356. The B version was not in vain the best-selling of the 356. A fantastic car.
