Very rare to find a matching-numbers Porsche 356 Cabriolet in such an original, well-preserved condition with equally meticulous documentation.
On 21 August 1962, Thornton Motors in Stockton, California, sold this Porsche 356 B 1600 Super (T6) Cabriolet new to Patricia G. Lynn. Miss Lynn traded in her 1959 Volkswagen as part of the deal and kept the Porsche 356 B with her husband until 1989. The Bali Blue colour No. 746 was a special-order and is noted as such on the official Porsche Car Pacific Inc. order form accompanying the car.
Miss Lynn carefully kept the original 1962 sales invoice, the original Porsche order form, the original insurance certificate and the vehicle registration receipts. But that’s not all; Miss Lynne retained all maintenance invoices over the years 1963–1989, allowing the history of this Porsche 356B Cabriolet to be traced in minute detail. Rare are cars with such an intact history.
Powered by a 1. 6-litre air-cooled flat-four engine developing 75 bhp in the “Super” (S) configuration, the 356 B 1600 S offered sprightly performance for its class. Paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, it could reach a top speed of around 170 km/ h and 0–60 mph in about 13 seconds, a respectable time for a 1960s sports car.
All 356 B T6 cabriolets were bodied by Reutter, Porsche’s long-time partner, combining Porsche’s technical precision with elegant open-top styling. The T6 was a mid-range model whose bodystyle featured minor changes, such as a squared-off front bonnet, an external fuel filler on the right-front wing and twin air vents on the rear engine lid.
Currently owned since 2021, with a single intermediary owner between 1989 and 2021, the Porsche 356B 1600S Cabriolet shows 124, 700 km from new, with three owners in total. It has remained in immaculate condition, with a former Bali Blue repaint that has mellowed.
The interior is nicely patinated and features grey leather, as on the era’s cabriolets. The original Blaupunkt radio has been replaced with another Blaupunkt FM radio. However, the original Blaupunkt “Music” and “Voice” radio is supplied with the car.
The Porsche starts at the push of a button and idles instantly. Once on the road, the drive is engaging and firm, as one would expect from a well-maintained car. The 75 hp provide ample power for modern traffic, and it is a pleasure to cruise in this classic Porsche without feeling hurried. Thanks to the synchronized gearbox, the 356 B is also a delight to drive in town. It’s truly the perfect summer car.
The car is delivered with the original VDO speedometer in miles (frozen at 65, 888 in 1989), the original 1962 356B driver’s manual and a rare original workshop manual for Porsche 356 B and C, along with numerous invoices and original documents.
Finally, a few invoices from 2021/ 22 cover oil change and filter, brake work including replacement of front brake shoes and front wheel bearings, valve adjustment, and carburettor synchronization.
The Porsche 356B 1600 S Cabriolet is currently registered in Denmark (EU) with historic plates and ready for its next owner.
