Description

Most Norton Manx were ridden to the ground in their day, so finding one that matches the numbers, and thus correct, down to the cadmium-plated hollow engine casings (for weight-saving) is quite unique and rare.
Here you'll find a superb specimen of the Norton Manx, a racing bike that has more wins to its name than any other maker, past or present.
The Norton Manx was the ultimate development of the Carroll camshaft engine introduced by Norton in 1930 and which had been developed with such success since then. The Norton Factory Racing team simply dominated the 350cc and 500cc categories in international racing in the 1940s and 1950s.
In the early 1950s, this development reached its peak in conjunction with the famous Featherbed frame. The Norton Manx engine was given a new lease of life with the introduction of the Featherbed frame and raced successfully until 1961, the Manx’s last year of production.
This particular Norton Manx was delivered new in July 1955 to “Arvidson” in Helsinki, Finland. Not much is known of its early days, it would clearly have raced, but fortunately the original engine-and-frame combination survived intact.
The engine is quite square with a bore and stroke of 76x76. 85mm.
Forward many years and the Norton Manx was sold to one of the founders of the “MC Collection” in Sweden. A renowned restorer in his own right, he undertook the restoration in the late 1990s and completed it to the high standard in which it presents itself today.
The Norton Manx was subsequently sold into an important family collection including many other interesting cars and motorcycles, among which a lovely Fraser Nash Le Mans coupé with impeccable provenance, to name but a few. It has now been decided to sell and make the Norton Manx available to someone else.
The notable original features worth mentioning are:
Long-stroke Amal GP carburettor mounted on Norton Manx only.
Smiths rev counter mounted on rubber.
Lucas racing magneto.
Manx close-ratio gearbox.
Original Manx clips with brazed levers on the handlebars.
Megaphone with inverted cone mounted on the 350cc Manx only.
Original “elephant foot” oil tank.
Authentic Manx magnesium hubs front and rear.
All nuts and bolts cadmium-plated to the original.
Hollow engine bolts and other bolts drilled for lightness according to original specs.

In short, this is a unique 1955 Norton Manx in stunning condition that would be at home on display or on the track.
It will require only a very light recommissioning (oil change, cap cleaning, petrol restoration) before riding.
