Description
This exemplar of the legendary Norton Manx Longstroke represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a magnificent race-bred model that has seen competition, one of the most iconic and high-performing racing motorcycles.
The Norton Manx with single overhead cam (SOHC) and long-stroke was an evolution of the Norton overhead cam engine, the fruit of a long development and initially introduced in 1930 with the “Carroll” engine. By the 1950s, the Manx dominated international competitions in 350 cc and 500 cc, thanks to the constant developments from the Norton Racing Department. The pairing of the Manx engine with the revolutionary duplex Featherbed frame, invented by Rex McCandless in 1949 and introduced for the 1950 model year, allowed the Norton Manx to remain competitive. Norton thus racked up victories throughout the 1950s, for both private and official riders.
This Manx with magnificent patina comprises an authentic running Manx Featherbed chassis, fitted with an early-generation Manx SOHC Longstroke engine, featuring a finned alloy cylinder head. The Featherbed frame is an authentic Manx Featherbed with integrated lubrication. An original Elephant-foot oil tank and a short alloy fuel tank are fitted, as well as a high-level exhaust. The paint on the alloy short fuel tank is presumably original. The original magnesium Manx alloy-nose hubs, front and rear, are mounted on alloy rims. A Lucas Racing ignition, a Smiths tachometer mounted on dampers and a full race fairing, typical of BeeBee Racing, complete the package.
We do not know whether this Manx was part of the BeeBee Racing stable; further research will undoubtedly reveal more about its history. All parts are original Norton Manx and the motorcycle is an authentic 1950s Norton Manx Longstroke exemplar.
This Manx was built by an enthusiast for exhibitions and has never taken part in a competition. Its previous owner displayed it in his workshop, starting it occasionally to lubricate the moving parts.
It is a magnificent and powerful Norton Manx Longstroke, ideal for the track or display. It will require a light recommissioning before it can be ridden again and represents an ideal acquisition for collectors or enthusiasts of historic racing.
