Description
The offer presents a fabulous tribute to the Delahaye 135 Competition Special model.
Introduced in 1936 and based on the Type 135 tourer, the Competition model quickly proved itself by taking second place in the overall classification at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1937, driven by Joseph Paul and Marcel Mongin, and beaten only by Bugatti that year. At Le Mans 1938, this result was considerably improved when Delahaye took the 1st, 2nd and 4th places out of 135 competition models.
The Delahaye 135CS was equipped with a 3. 5 L six-cylinder heads engine with increased compression, a lighter and better-balanced crankshaft, larger valves and, just as importantly; breathing via triple Solex carburettors. The power reached 160 hp at 4, 000 rpm.
This specific Delahaye 135CS Tribute was converted in 1985 from a Delahaye 135M, also powered by triple carburettors. Equally important, the alloy-bodied coachwork, including the flared rear and front wings in the handsome form of the 135CS, was rebuilt during the restoration to match the original.
In 1987, the Delahaye was sold at auction from the James C. Leake Automobile Collection in the United States. It was subsequently imported and belonged to an avid owner based in Monaco for nearly 30 years. The owner kept the car in pristine condition and enthusiastically used it with his wife on various rallies and classic car gatherings in the south of France. There are many photos and a few articles in various magazines for documentation.
In 2015, the Delahaye was resold to its current owner in Denmark, where it has been regularly used and well maintained ever since.
A substantial file containing documents, Delahaye literature, photos, further research on the 135 Competition model and invoices relating to maintenance and works carried out over the years accompanies the car.
The Delahaye is supplied with old American registration documents and more recent Monaco registration papers and is ready to be driven on the road.
