Description

The 1953 Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet is one of those rare post-war machines where elegance and performance found a perfect, if fleeting, harmony. Born from the partnership between Donald Healey and Alvis, it paired the sharp, competition-focused chassis of the Healey Silverstone with the lush power of Alvis’s famous 3. 0-litre six-cylinder engine. With its two SU carburettors developing 106 horsepower, it wasn’t a fiery race car, but in an era of rationing and restrictions it offered the intoxicating promise of 160 km/ h with the top down. A luxury in an era when reaching the ton was a nearly mythical achievement reserved for a privileged few.

With only 25 examples produced, it can safely be said that the Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet was, and remains, the preserve of a minority. A hand-built aluminium coachwork by Panelcraft of Birmingham gave the car a sleek, elegant stance, a blend of sport roadster and refined grand tourer, but also a high price. This car was aimed at men and women who could afford the luxury, even in austere times.

The Alvis Healey was a car that embodied the automotive optimism of the 1950s. Today, it is appreciated as much for its historical significance as for its blend of British craftsmanship and sporting character. Equally at home on fast motorways as on winding English roads.

This 1953 Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet was sold new in the United Kingdom under registration number PJH 274. In 1988, the car was sold under the Californian sun, where it remained until 2007, before returning to its former owner in Belgium.

In 2011, the car was sold to a renowned Danish collector-mechanic, who undertook a full restoration with the intention of using it for his own collection.

As one would expect from a professional mechanic working exclusively on classic and vintage cars, and in this case a car produced in very small numbers, the process is perfectly documented and a comprehensive photo report of the restoration is available. Every part of the car has been photographed, from dismantling to final reassembly, which testifies to the craftsmanship and attention to detail involved in the restoration. The restoration was completed in 2016 and the Alvis Healey was registered in 2017. Although built for his personal use, the car has mainly been kept on display in his workshop, with a few short runs and engine warm-ups to keep it in running condition.

The Alvis Healey is now ready to welcome its next owner and to benefit from the full restoration work that has brought it back to life.

Registered on Danish (EU) registration documents in force.
